I don't really understand what could possibly be interesting about 128 computer players. They can't have unique identities or AIs. My experience with Civ games has been that once you get a machine down that can survive your biggest threat, you can mechanically overcome one, two, twenty civilizations without changing your tactics. 128 players would work if the basic productive unit of your civ was the vassal, not the planet. I guess Europa Universalis has 128 players, but you are not e

I like your framing that pull and politics are winning over merit. I'm on the side of the feminists intellectually, but when they start activating their network to shame people they're using a kind of power that's very virulent and hard to resist.

Exploration Game Starship Battle Game Ship Customization game Planet Exploration Game Trading Game Adventure Game As a kid, the starship battle was my favorite. "Launch fighters. Launch fighters." But as an adult, every found ship was totally useless and I did everything with my main upgradeable ship. It's less than a year since I played it and all my memories are of the amazingly characterized races. The

I am posting in this thread so I can uncheck the "subscribe" button to see if that works. The e-mails this forum sends me have no clickable links -- not even the thread title. They're underlined and blue, but not links. I will check this thread once or twice more in case Brad can tell me anyone I can forward the email to as a bug report.

@Jafo, I'm just showing my age -- there were no URL shorteners when I started on the web. However, URLs disrupt the flow of a post and text links allow you to build curiosity and context for the thing you're linking to, so I am going to continue doing them. IMO it's not an ideal world, in fact there are many things about the design of natural selection that prevent it from ever approaching an ideal world, the question is whether you are going to help others make it through

Can I suggest that before you start using the acronym MDD you introduce it -- just change the first occurrence of "major depressive disorder" to "major depressive disorder (MDD)". I went through the entire post not knowing exactly what it was, and even after I decided to figure it out I couldn't Ctrl+F for the first instance. I appreciate that you didn't wait till you were all the way through your depression to talk about it some, that's <a href="http://theferrett.livejour

I just played Star Control 2 last year and I loved it from end to end. I never figured out how to fight effectively with any of the alien ships, unfortunately, but it didn't harm my enjoyment any. I don't understand your position on the Ur-Quan. It's like buying the rights to Star Wars but saying out of respect to George Lucas, no Wookiees, Jedi, or Darth Vader. Make a game with the exact mechanics and plot of SC2 but with different skins and flavor on everything

If there was a payoff for remembering to watch for the kid, I missed it. Kinda stunned that purchasing an entire building is not your biggest purchase. I'm kinda nostalgic for that center column in the old Wall Street Journal, my parents always left a stack in the bathroom to read while you were on the can.

But to my eyes, Cinderella is way better animated than Snow White. It's the fluidity, mainly -- compare the birds flying around Cinderella's dress to just about any scene from Snow White . And in Snow White, it seems like the animated things are separate from the background in an annoying way. Animating technology must have trumped effort.

The degree of lawlessness and chaos will be exponentially proportional to its extent. To think otherwise is to have a blind, naive/misguided faith in Human Nature.... Believing that human nature is worse than it is is just as ignorant. I think Draginol's wrong to assume there would be violence just because people are starving. If you look at actual, real-world cases of mass famine and civilization destruction via bombs, people do not go feral and do som

What makes you work is the feeling it gives you more prestige and status. This is the reason raising your taxes makes you feel like working less even though you don't need the money the taxes are taking. Makes you feel like your effort isn't esteemed.

Point #1 seems weird to me, because money is easy to pile up and you can get it from anywhere, but work is hard. When I can contribute time or money, I always choose money. Perhaps it's different on business scale -- some angel who can contribute $10 million to your venture is worth more than most any worker.

I don’t know the exact date when I reached the point where I didn’t “have” to work anymore. It was something like 2006 or 2007. That was around the same time you started using Celexa . I was thinking maybe Celexa made you satisfied with your life so that you readjusted your feelings of "I have to work" and started thinking "I'm doing OK." OTOH, I just

I don't have a link that says "Settings"-- I had to click a tiny blue flower in the upper right-hand corner of Gmail. Just thought I'd clarify that crazy obscure design decision for anyone else having trouble.

It's kind of like running for President. When you win everyone says you had the best communications strategy, are a great orator, et cetera... the exact same behavior and you lose, you "didn't connect with the American people." When your games were flying high, I looked at your company like IronKaiser; I said, "Wow, there's a company that really knows how to connect and be open with its fans to get feedback. They really get the Internet and they're gonna profit from

Wow, you cut your energy use from 300 to 100 kwh/day just from the pool? My math from the chart was somehow very, very wrong -- is that chart logarithmic or something? It seems like even if the pool were on 100% of the time you would only have saved 50% of your kwh by turning it off! FWIW, I live in an efficiency apartment in Wisconsin and I used 17 kwh/day last month. If you got that enormous house down to 100 kwh/day that is actually amazing -- your house i

But people didn't evolve "good" -- they evolved "look good to others, and act good when it has a better payoff than acting bad." And they evolved it in a very un-internet like context. It's like trusting people to fish you out of a swimming pool with a long pole; they might be good people, but their visual system was not designed to calculate distances in the distorted context of an air-water barrier, and the pole will poke you in the head. Or,by trying to be good, we end u
