I had a program dump when I just finished taking an enemy planet after a large fleet to large fleet attack. The game froze. I did a ctrl-alt-del and then re-entered Sins and then received notice of a C++ program error. I reloaded the last saved game, did the battle again, won and there was no error.

I received this message from an ally, but had no ideal where they were. Also, I get messages from Ally saying to the effect that they will hold one of my planets until I arrive. But there were no enemy ships near the planet.

I think you need the ability to Stop the action and give you a chance to go through and update planet levels and build structures. When moving ships around as you are being attacked, you tend to forget that you need to go back and deal with planet X.
