Sins can handle animated textures from what i hear, but i dont know how the mesh's utilize them yet, and i dont know what kind of performance hit the sins engine will take from using alot of animations. There is a reason why sins turrets aren't animated, but that is mesh animation not texture. Rest is like you said under NDA.

It takes time to learn 3dsmax. It took me over 3 years to learn what i know, and i still dont know everything about max yet. I use version 6, and now we got version 9. Its one of those "easy to use, hard to master" programs. Dont ask me to help model, because i have too much on my plate now, and zero time to do it. If you are truly interested in learning modeling in max. I suggest you google some tutorials, and start there. There are also texturing tutorials as well. BTW nice m

Thats a pretty ambitious project there. Tho it does sound good. Right now we cant make multi star maps with p5y's editor. So we will have to wait for the forge tools. Unless you are feeling brave, and want to do some notepad editing. Open up a .galaxy file, and play around with it (make sure you back up the original). Much will be trial, and error. Most of the entry's are pretty self explanatory. Use another .galaxy file as an example.

Nothing new from me just yet. I am currently in the middle of a big move. Plus my work tends to keep me away from my puter for a while (I travel around the state for my job). So time is my worst enemy ATM. Once i get settled into my new place, and get some more down time i can concentrate more on this :) BTW good job on the planet Thrawn even tho it didnt turn out quite like u planned :D

The Sins normal maps are identical to a standard normal map made using the nvidia dds plugins for photoshop. The only difference is sins uses grayscale. Ill post some better shots of the mesh errors later (ill have to re-convert my models on my laptop cause i have no access to my desktop at the moment). It seems like the vertices unweld at the texture seems, and the lighting looks like it is coming from the wrong direction on the model as compared to the rest of the objects on the map.

Tristan i think my model problems have to do with them being in "X" format. In any other viewer, or 3d program ranging from milkshape to 3dsmax, to lightwave i have no issues with the mesh. However i had to convert from LWO to X format using Deep Exploration. I havent attempted an import from .obj, or .3ds yet. It may also be the mesh editor itself causing the mesh errors, but TBH i wont know for sure until i try converting some more models. I could also try to flip the faces o

Because they dont have The Stress Puppy (aka Major Stress) or digital Underground/Star Trek:Homeworld working on it. :p After seeing that screenshot I can say its the same old "lets draw in the kiddies" Star Trek instead of making it "true" trek. This isnt Star Trek, This is "World of Wartrek" Cartoon characters, and a stupid looking ship...Hmmm

I really cant tell on this model if the normal maps work, or not due to the mesh errors, and the fact this ship doesnt use much bump mapping. The DA's definetly work. The errors are every texture seems vertice got unwelded. Causing some major smoothing errors. It is wierd it is almost as if my mesh was turned inside out. The light is shining in the opposite direction of the light source. lighting the backfaces. I am going to experiment importing using .obj, and .3ds this test model was

the -da or data texture is the luminosity texture. The green color channel is specifically used for self illumination (windows, lights, etc.). The red color channel is the team color. Blue is reflection. Alpha is bloom. In the -cl texture the alpha channel is where you would use the specular map Yup there is a tutorial I wrote it [link="https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/?forumid=443&aid=162482"]WWW Link[/link]

Thanks to Code Herder we can now import models into the game! :D My 1st Star Trek mod test model import results.. As you can see there are some very bad mesh errors i need to fix (my fault, not the importers fault). But everything works. Hard points, CL, DA, and NM textures work. (no, this ship is NOT going to be in the cobalt slot in the future. It is a cap ship) Much work to be done, but this is just the beginning :D [img]http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/79/screens

DOH! Ok its official im an idiot. Had caps... :/ fixed, textures work, will post shot later. You need to change the order of the textures to this order: CL is 1st, then DA, then NM. Right now you have it at CL, NM, DA. The way you have it now puts the normal maps where the data texture should be. The blue ghost glow was quite scary lol. I had to rename my NM's to DA, and DA's to NM as a temporary fix. This is awsome! This tool is now "stress puppy certified". We can import mode

You can make them too after spending 3+ years learning a modeling, and an image editing program. Like 3dsmax, and Photoshop. LOL! Your jealous at me? I am just an amateur hobby modeler. BTW my avatar is that very same model ;)

Ok i managed to get a model in game, but the problem is the textures wont show up. I know why they wont. It is because the editor saves the file locations of the textures used in the mesh file. In my case my C: drive. The game is installed on my D: drive I used my c drive to avoid the endless clicking. I probably should have put my .jpgs in the sins textures folder, and linked them from there (yes i do have .dds copys of the textures). I tried to manually edit out the file loca

The problem with HW2 is that since it is usually played on smaller maps people usually spam uber fleets anyway despite the weak resourcers, and having to protect roids. What you described was a typical MP game of HW2 for me :/ Which is what eventually turned me off to the HW series. However, now that i think about it p5yy is right. This resourcing model could be done on top of the fleet logistics points. Most people use the traders as agro magnet free meat shields right now, because of

Any smart player with 1, or 2 well balanced groups can easily take down planetary defenses. The defenses are pretty much there as a delaying tactic. Sins brings new meaning to "a good offense is the best defense". If the PJI's do what was suggested here that will change things a little, and make things interesting. It will bring the risk factor back. Right now there is little to no risk because if you get in trouble all you have to do is retreat. Limiting fleet size, and increasing it w

I like most of the ideas you posted. With some exception, and ill explain below. I wonder if it is possible to limit how many ships can be in a single group. In other words research fleet logistics capacity like in GC2. Higher tiers means more ships in a single fleet. Limiting fleet size will put a screeching halt to the single "uber steamroll" fleet from forming. Therefore creating what was intended in the game by having multiple fleets, or battle groups on the map. I am again

I agree since windows XP is nothing more than win2k with a bunch of bells, and whistles. I dont see why it shouldnt run. However like yarl said there are no guarantees.

What about gaming sites like Gamespy, Strategy Planet, etc. etc., or gaming magazines? Hell they can post reviews of sins, but will they plug the game?

Nav lights aren't that important right now. They can be added later. Thats a "nice to have" feature not a "must have" like saving the file :p I feel your pain. Back in my homeworld modding days i've done many an "oops". I forgot to say thank you for providing the tool despite it being broken right now :)
