Personally I don't think the game needs more races - I don't see how that contributes to a better game. I would like a single player campaign, more ship abilities (which would make you specialize even more), and more tech. The amount of ships currently is ok for me. I build a capital ship and a handfull of the small frigates and they take care of the problem.
