There is a great scene in Light by M John Harrison which decribes corvette sized vehicles doing battle in 16 dimmensional space, Thats 13 spatial and 3 temporal dimensions. Get your heads around that. I know it's only tenuously linked to this conversation, but it's friggin cool .

Oh yeah it was hard. I played for ages thinking I was the top dog in the galaxy, kicking my neighbors asses. Then I bumped into these guys who started blowing my shit up...I zoomed out the map completely and realized I had been playing for hours and hours conquering less than 5% of the map.....and that these new enemies owned 90% of the rest of it. I was just a small fish in a big ocean after all! Ulp!
No empire lasts forever, With regard to China, their economy has been [link="http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/sunday/commentary/la-op-mead30dec30,0,1035099.story?coll=la-sunday-commentary"]vastly overrated[/link]. This has been news for a while now but it has yet to sink into the collective consciousness.
This is really a pointless debate. I don't care if the whole world is playing consoles as long as there are people making the games I want to play. And there are. And it looks like there will be for the foreseeable future. The mainstream will always be bigger, and it will always be a bit shallower. Who gives a shit?
I used to play Stars! back in the day and it actually made me a bit dissapointed in the scale of Sins. I kind miss sending tens of thousands of battleships into a system and landing millions of troops to conquer the place. Stripping entire stars systems completely bare of minerals with gargantual mining fleets. I played my last game o
It's dying? Never been stronger I reckon! Don't worry about consoles selling more. Of course they will. They require no effort. They are cheaper. Same as mindless Hollywood blockbusters with pretty special effects will always sell more tickets than hip, intelligent, arty movies. Doesn't mean the indy movies are gonna die. there will aways be a number of gamers wanting to play 'hardcore' games and those geeks with the talent and determination to make them. Oh and since w
I play the Empires mod for Half Life 2 and each round of that is about as long (as well as most RTS games)!
Empires is the shit! It's the only multiplayer FPS I enjoy anymore.
I does seem a little one sided. As I understand it the AI can simply demand materials from you until they are happy enough to allow you to ally with them. It seems it is set up so that the AI is always acting from an assumed position of power when this may not be the case in reality. I should be able to go up to an AI that has 0% happiness and demand they give me cash or I step on their balls (or alien equivalent thereof) and if they suck up to ME enough I may allow them the privileged of allyi
If you can find a copy of Jeff Waynes War Of The Worlds you'll be laughing mate. It is RTS battles mixed with juicy turn based strategy. I still have mine but Vista doesn't like it :(
[link="http://www.empiresmod.com/"]Empires[/link] is a mod for HL2 you may enjoy. Multiple class, customizable skills/weapon loadouts, vehicles, huge techtree, RTS basebuilding (like, proper, build-anywhere-you-like basebuilding). On a full server with two organised teams battles are epic I'm hooked on it. Check out [link="http://playthisthing.com/empires"]this[/link] review.
People quiting like that is sad. I've beleived for a long time that gamers generally don't play with respect and dignity. It's a shame. "It is a long-standing tradition in fencing that the person who "receives a touch from" (is theoretically wounded by) the adversary, must acknowledge it openly. Perhaps you're familiar with the call, "Touché!" which means "I have been touched!" A fencer never claims a touch against his/her opponent—or even inquires about one that has not been freely a
