Decisions like the size of your attacking force and defending force have to be taken into account. Fleet composition has to be considered.I don't see how that's different from a free-for-all in any other RTS. Aside from being 'bigger'.
Honestly, I haven't played a lot of RTSs besides StarCraft and WarCraft and a little Age of Empires III. But in those, at least it seemed to me, there was only one path to the enemy and the fighting either took place at his base, your bas
It's very true that larger maps make rushing far less useful and the 'civ-like' strategies more effective, but that's just because it can take ten minutes to fly from one side of the map to the other, not because of the complex layered decision-making required.
That's true if the only thing that has changed is a larger map size. But let's also assume that you are fighting at least 6, 8, or 10 opponents. At some point you have to focus on one and beat him down while fend

I wanted to play and defeat 4 Hard AIs for the Achievement before I downloaded the 1.03 patch. I played the game on Gateway (I prefer large, random but the premise of this map seemed pretty cool). It was the most exciting game I have played to date. After finishing it I immediately began a large, random, 8 hard AI map. I was about an hour into it when I realized that I hadn't downloaded the patch. D'oh! I read forum posts a lot and have heard some glowing pra
Yeah, I think that Psychoak may be on to something. For those of you who think this game lacks depth, try increasing the size of your maps. I'm not going to say that it will convince everyone but it's a different game at larger sizes. I play large, random maps with 3-5 stars and at least 8 opponents. I've played those settings since my first few games where I learned the ropes (well, I tried the Gateway map a week ago and had fun). I find that at this size there is a great deal of s
1. Click on your planet. Click on the first pane in the left-hand corner (white wireframe on green background). Click on the first pane in the left-hand corner. Terran planets can get 4 up to four upgrades. Also remember to research techs that give you more population (at work so I don't know the names of the things to click). Mo' people = mo' money. 2. If I'm playing the computer I assume that I'm not going to get attacked in the first ten or so minutes. During this time I've col
Amen, Nephilim! I really don't like the cartoony look that things took for Warcraft III and afterwards. But don't get me wrong, I'll still play SC2. And as the OP mentioned I expect to put some time into Spore as well. In fact, besides the occasional Wii or 360 game that comes along, I expect that GCII:TotA, SoaSE, Spore, and SC2 will pretty much be what I play this year on the PC.
It's to the point where I only post for two reasons: to help out the newbs and to add my praise to posts like these. These forums are way too flamy and whiny for my taste! Like I've said before, great game guys. Keep up the good work. Extra kudos to Frogboy for wearing his flame-retardant suit and troll-spray... he keeps going back in day after day :) Long live SD and IC!!!
Pmutzu has some good advice. But what do you think that you are doing that is making you lose? Is money coming too slow? Fleet not big enough? Expanding too many planets without fortifying them? Pirates kicking your butt? What are your games set up like? Small map? One or two AIs? Easy, Normal, or Hard AIs? I suggest a small map against one or two Easy AIs to start with. If you go with two AIs, then include Pirates. If you include the Pirates make sure you bid 250 on
Good work. Bravo! I don't have a single complaint about the game. I see plenty of people in the forums do, but not me. AI spams siege frigates? I spam Cobalts and hunker down. If they bomb me out so be it. It's not the AIs fault, it's mine. I should have been better prepared. AI gangs up on me? I fall back to a spot I've previously reinforced and plan a new strategy. I'm working on a game now against 4 Hard AIs and have had many moments where a revert to a saved game w
I turn my scouts on auto scout and hope they don't keep auto-scouting the pirate base. As long as they stay clear of the pirate base they will continue to scout and can, for the most part, stay alive for a while (early game, at least).
Stardock will take care of you. I know that you are pissed right now. Just take a moment to vent and then fire off an e-mail. Everything will turn out. They are good folks... the "good" guys if you will.
I haven't downloaded 1.03 yet but am looking forward to it. I'm just throwing this out there but could it be that the computer is playing its "personality" a little better with the patch? What I mean is, for instance, does the researcher "personality" actually put more emphasis on research. Could that explain any of the behavior? I mean, I'm quite aware that there is no "act foolish" or "do nothing" personality so my theory might not hold much water ;) I'll finish up
Any race is deadly in the right hands. I'm starting to move away from playing TEC so much. In fact, I've set the last two games to Random. I've ended up with Vasari both times but I think I'll stick with Random for a while. I also started playing Hard AIs and it is definitely a different play style. I have to "pay attention" a little bit more now. Very challenging. Keep up the good work, Ken!
Welcome aboard (from a non-developer... well, from Ironclad that is).
Make sure you are improving the tax base on your planets. And also make sure that you research the civilian techs that give more population to your various planets. It sucks when two big fleets converge on you. There are no two ways about it. But keep at it. The first game I won against an easy AI was easy. The second was a little harder. Then I got my butt handed to me when I went up against 3 easy AIs. But keep it up and keep pressing. Playing defensive, IMHO, will onl
Yeah, I was thinking that. Why not play with two computer opponents but have one of them on your team? Then the two of you can gang up on the other AI.
Heh. Between Annatar and myself you'll be up and running in no time! :CONGRAT:
Use the pirates to your advantage. Be the highest bidder when their timer reaches zero. But babysit it for a minute or two after that. They don't immediately set out until a short time after that and the bidding can go up (and onto you) in the meantime. And don't go after them (until you are really, really ready). Expand as fast as you can for the first few worlds. Clear out each system with your free capital ship and colonize as you go. Remember to build up your infrastructure so
Ah, Ascendancy... that brings me back to the college days. This game does remind me of Ascendancy with its use of phase lanes :) Start slow, just like Annatar suggests. I started on small with one easy AI. Then I moved to medium with 3 easy AIs (and lost). Tried again and won. Then I moved on to a medium sized map and normal AI. So on and so forth... Enjoy!
"BSG mode"... Hahahahahahahaha!!! Nice one, Advalary :CONGRAT:
Can't wait. You guys rock! Guess I'll go crank up the AI to Hard now so I can have my butt handed to me this week, get better, and then get it handed to me all over again after the patch.
Mopping up does get a bit tedious. And it becomes even more of a headache in multiple star systems. In my current game I am playing a 5-star galaxy and completely control the central star system. I am creeping into the other systems and taking over planets without much resistance. I get so bored that I fall asleep (granted, I don't get to play until the wife and kids are in bed). I'm looking forward to the new patch and to see the computer surrender.
Heck, I did my best to go easy on him. But I was thinking pretty much what all of you are saying
The game, like many others, uses stock sound effects. You'll hear some of these effects not only in games but in movies too. Check out this thread... [link="https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/?forumid=402&aid=301785"]WWW Link[/link]
