Planetary defenses, while not quite effective at stopping the AI, do wonders to halt most pirate raids. Plop down two repair stations, two or three fighter bays, and a bunch of stationary guns and you should have yourself a nice little pirate roadblock. Of course, any ships in the vicinity will help and get xp along the way.

Thanks, gents! I will immediately incorporate Z,X, and C into my bag o' tricks. Yes, the space bar is already a friend of mine. I find that, even after playing over a dozen games, the hints that display while loading still surprise me with new tips from time to time.

Aye, so there is the difference. Thanks Annatar! So planet vision not only conveys where the planets are, which is helpful, but will also show what is built there, which is critical when you are about to break your alliance and drop bombs on their heads ;)
Both AI and diplomacy are in "working order" but they could both be improved. Neither are broken or prevent you from playing the game
I have to agree with this. If you read through threads where he posts, Vinraith is very vocal about his desires to improve the AI and improve the diplomacy. And he's certainly entitled to his opinion. Can either be improved? Of course. But either of these aspects don't reflect a broken game. I make the diplomacy work for me.
Your ships should simply utilize the wormholes in a shortest-route method - for instance, if "planets" x and y are wormholes, and you have a ship in x, clicking somewhere in y will cause your ship to travel through the wormhole.
Ah yes, that's true. Your fleet should just automatically use the wormhole if it is the fastest path from point A to point B when you've zoomed out to the galaxy level. Just right click and watch 'em plot their course.

Yeah, he rubs me the wrong way sometimes. And he and I disagree on some things. I've never played online so I don't know how good/bad he and his pals may be. But I do look forward to his posts - regardless of how little I agree with him, how scathing his comments are, or how much I roll my eyes at what he writes. He's passionate about what he believes in. He tries to do his homework. I would never assume that I am always right nor always agreeable, so I can't blame him for what he

Oh, I've played plenty on 1.02 and don't really have many of the issues that people complained about. As I wrote in another post...
Good work. Bravo! I don't have a single complaint about the game. I see plenty of people in the forums do, but not me. AI spams siege frigates? I spam Cobalts and hunker down. If they bomb me out so be it. It's not the AIs fault, it's mine. I should have been better prepared. AI gangs up on me? I fall back to a spot I've pr
Part of the reason master of orion 3 failed is it tried to cover mainstream and a tiny market at the same time, and ended up alienating both sides and landing somewhere in the abyss in between, with lots of cool features cut but still complicated enough to keep the mainstream players away.
No, the reason that MOO3 failed is because it was a trying to cover too much and got pushed out the door too early. They weren't just making the next 4X game, they were attempting to

Excellent recap and congrats on the win! I read every word and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm working on my own 7 vs. 1 Hard AI game but I haven't dared lock the teams. I'll need a buddy or two along the way ;)

I get to play a couple of hours most nights after the wife and kids are in bed, so the game I just setup should take me about a week. I'll download the patch after that since 1.04 should be that much closer to release. Thanks for the input!
That people can see in the game what they want (ie, it's 4X enough for the slow TBS players and RTS enough for the micro RTS guys) is a triumph by itself.
Indeed! The fact that this conversation can even take place, IMHO, is a feat in itself. I couldn't have this conversation about StarCraft or Age of Empires (clearly RTS games) nor could I have it about MOO2 or GalCivII (clearly 4X games). Is it 4X? Yes and no. Is it RTS? Yes and no. Is it RT4X? Obvious

Ah, I never even considered actual phase lanes connecting planets in different star systems. Ha! I haven't played with the map editor or galaxy forge too much. Thanks for the info and the maps, Fandango.

12 Replies 26,635 Views

But if you don't have any phase lanes going to the star then you can't use the star to jump to another star system. So it looks like the answer to the OP is "Yes, in a roundabout manner".
A ship can't jump to an unknown wormhole.....
So if I haven't found both ends of a wormhole I can't just jump in and see where it goes? Is that right? I haven't tried it but if that's true then WEAK. If it's not true, you can simply not connect any phase lanes to the star and rely on wormholes to connect star systems. But if it's true... :(
I imagine if we took every map and split it into two systems, a great many problems would be alleviated. Sova rushing, and spam/rushing in general, would lose a great deal of power seeing how you'd be required to research long jumps, and then find the opponent in the other system.
So, if I'm reading this right, a lot of the spam issues and cheese strats wouldn't be so much of an issue in larger, more balanced maps? I mean, it makes sense in a way. Brad, this see

NICE! I was starting to sweat when this wasn't picked up immediately. I love the new series and am saddened that this season (April 4th can't come fast enough) will be the last. So say we all!

Three For and none Against? Hmm, if I had to guess I would have thought that, after three votes one-sided votes, I would have three telling me not to download. C'mon, 1.03 patch haters, where's your voice? If this keeps up I'll upgrade as soon as this massive game is over.
Troll.Anyway I played this game again today after my initial disappointment, taking the advice of psychoak and I was surprised to find that it is quite a different game.
Don't mind Kruelgor. He's abrasive, yes, but he's not a bad guy. I was a little turned off by his comments at first but I just keep in mind that his words are strong. Good to hear that you are finding the game to not be a bust. I think that the pace boils down to just a matter of taste. You

@brindle Hmm, while that proves to be fun and challenging during single-player action I can see where it can be downright "unfun" in some cases in multiplayer. I wonder how hard it would be to add setup options for starting locations on random maps. For instance, what if you could control: Spawn in same/different star system as teammates (2 stars with 2 teams of 2 players - start in same system or not?) Player placement in multiple star systems is even/confined/random (Even =
