Thanks to everyone that replied. The information is greatly appreciated. I foolishly kept trying to capture them with warships and no matter how many capital ships I sent at them... they kept sneering at me.
I'm new to Sins of a Solar Empire and I've played a couple of 1v1 games against the computer and have managed to figure out many of the basic elements of gameplay. However, some asteroid fields and other locations have asteroids and metal extractors but aren't colonizable. The extractors say they are invulnerable, but they can be captured.
