I try to put off buying logistics slots for as long as possible. When I get a new planet I'll use it to increase my tech (civilian or military as required), but I try to always leave a slot for a trade post. Doing this, I use my rate of expansion to regulate the timing of my teching. Of course, there usually comes a point where you need a speicific tech to deal with an emerging situation, and at that point I'll buy the logistics upgrades. If that doesn't happen then I'

Well, I never really build turrets, but I can see a situation where someone rings the planet with them at low orbit to protect against siege firgates, and the point of an upgrade which would then allow siege frigates to fire from outwith turret range. I have no clue if the upgrade is significant enough to allow for that, since I haven't built siege frigates in ages (though I have been trying them a bit with the latest patch). If I use anything it's hanger bays with fighters to pro
The time to get these upgrades is when you're sitting at an upkeep threshold That's my feeling towards upgrades in one sentance.
And also: upgrades cost more than the resources listed; they also cost time. In the same way that you should never have a massive quantity of resources sitting unspent, I think you should try not to have a panel in the tech screen sitting with nothing researching on it.

What I got from the intro was that the Advent embraced AI in a society in which they were forbidden (this may be because I'm projecting, with my need for the Advent to be The Culture), and so were proscribed. So, religious intolerance on the part of [pre]TEC, Advent come back for revenge, and Vasari are our evil alien oppressors. I mean, I for one welcome the return of our alien overlords... But you don't really need to read into it for religious or political sins - the wh

I'm not entirely sure what the base OS on the PS3 is. In the early days it was rumoured to be linux, but that seems to have remained rumour. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the core that XBM sits on is linux. It would make a lot more sense than Sony starting from scratch.

That is just complete nonsense. What you're saying is that some things that call themselves linux aren't linux. You understand that not every version ships with every package? Linux is a kernel at heart, nothing more. Aside from which, every version of windows has wsh, which will let you write scripts in vbs or javascript. And of course, if you were very perverse you, could do that rename using a cmd batch file.

You can always tell a fanboy from a fan; a fan will happily tell you about all the good stuff his favourite thing has to try to get you to join him. A fanboy will extol the virtues of every single thing about his favourite, even the flaws. By all means advocate linux on account of it's security, stability, cost and community. It's UI, though, is terrible; consistency is incredibly important in user interface design, and linux is lacking it in its environment (Gnome, KDE, how

Recently I've been getting some good multiplayer games in with my friends, but one of them has a very dodgy internet connection and it's made this more of an issue than normal: am I right in thinking that when you hit Save in a multiplayer game, it sends a signal to all players connected, and all players machines save the game? Then when you try to load it, when a player connects to the game it checks their HDD for the relevant save file, and if it finds it they can join in the co

...and like spiralblitz says, knowing when to bid and when not to is important. It's better to not bid at all than to bid and lose, unless you can bid in a pattern to try to make your opponent overcommit resources.

I don't think it's been posted for a while, and it still works (since I used it a couple of weeks ago) - one trick for dealing with the pirates without losing your planet is to wait for them to arrive and then scuttle all your buildings (and maybe your worker ships too). The pirates leave as soon as there are no more targets in system, so if you do it quick enough they'll go away before their siege frigates have killed your planet. Probably not worth doing for asteroids, but certa

I don't think you know what a straw man is (which is weird, since you link to the wiki article). The game I'm playing with only 10 frigates is the first stage of sins, before you pop fleet cap. Unless you don't build a capital, which I'm assuming everyone does.
Maintaining a sizable, powerful fleet is your first priority. But ignoring upgrades altogether is a grevious mistake.
You behave as though the costs for upgrading your weapons and the costs for fielding a larger fleet are similar, though. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your first hull upgrade takes all of one lab and 400 credits and 25 crystal. Compare that to the HUGE cost of building 150 supply in ships.
Well, that's not really a cost for cost comparisson, but even so: if you're having to choose between doing a bunch of upgrade research v's popping up and building a fleet the

When you click the mouse it has to work out which planetary system you are refering to. AFAIK it does this by drawing an imaginary line down from your screen until it intersects the z-elevation of a planet, and then checks within that planets objects. If you made every planets object cover the entire system, I think you'd only be able to select / move / order to objects within the topmost planet.

The interface would get horribly confused. This happens already, when 1 planet spawns right over another along the z-axis. Try it. You won't like it :)

DirectX *did* own OpenGL. And now we have a situation where everyone has to use it, and since they are locked into it games become Windows only. If you are so bothered about trolls how about you don't go around baselessly calling people trolls and we won't call you an asswipe.
