Yes, nice guide. I've avoided playing against more than 1 AI because if you do 2 or more they all seem to get a hard on for only the human player. Even with multiple stars. I also tend to go for hanger defences because they are fast and flexable but I will have to give turrents a try. They seem to work for the pirates.
When I play against multiple AIs I pick one to be my "friend" and make a real effort to do all of the missions he

I'd like to officially apologize for being really, really stupid. It was all my fault. Go to your SoaSA video settings screen. You there? Right. Now see that little slider that says "Full Screen Gamma?" Pull it up about 25%. Watch your text get all fuzzy, just like mine was. And apparently it doesn't factor in the gamma when processing screenshots.

That's very odd. The screenshot of the fuzzy screen is not itself fuzzy. So somehow it's my monitor. And it only seems to be doing it to that particular font. The v1.09 in the corner is crystal clear. I wonder what could be causing it. It's still displayed perfectly in windowed mode.

I'm using plug and play drivers. The monitor is a Gateway LE1936. It doesn't seem to have any drivers to download - plug and play are the ones it's supposed to use. The video card is a Geforce 9600 GT. I'm making sure its drivers are up to date right now.

This is odd... I have a 1440x900 resolution monitor. At first I had trouble getting it to change resolutions - it would say it was at 1440x900, but it was really a stretched, hideous-looking 1024x768. I had to manually change the resulution in the user.setting file to get it to really work. But now the text (in the menus, for instance) is blurry when it's in full screen mode. The words almost run together. When I switch it to windowed mode the text is sharp - not blurry or running

I give Stardock my gaming dollars because 1) they make awesome games and 2) I don't have to worry about intrusive copy protection. He also fails to mention the business tactic of releasing games without copy protection so users can install it on all their friends' computers... and then requiring a unique CD-key to download bonus packs and patches, as well as to play online. Once you're hooked, it's too late... you need to purchase the game to fully enjoy your new addiction. Clever basta

Usually I have either crystal OR metal in abundance, depending on whether I've gotten more volcanic or arctic planets.

the z-axis is mainly useless because ships don't have a sensor radius. As soon as you have a single ship in a gravity well, you can see the entire thing. Imagine if you could hide ships above the default plane, above the normal sensor radius of other ships. Also imagine if planets actually occluded your view - so you could only see ships that were both in sensor range AND in line of sight of your own ships. But the gravity wells are really too small to make this kind of strategy feasibl

Oh, and instead of "searches" in the empire tree, I think it might do well to have something more like tabs. So you could cycle through it real quick and see colonies, or fleets, or scouts, or whatever you as a player have designated.

I would prefer a scrolling update on the side, so you can see at a glance exactly what important events have occurred in the last few minutes. Great game though, and from what I remember of the GalCiv series, this is only going to be the tip of the iceberg. You'll see. Update after update will address issues and add new content and amazing new features that will blow you away. It's the way they operate. They realease the "basic game" with no copy protection, knowing people will install

On the other hand, I have to say that the vast majority of my computer knowledge has come from, over the years, trying to get hundreds of games working. Back in the day it was autoexec.bat and config.sys, and trying to get the IRQs set correct for the sound to work, and assign the correct amount of memory. I have learned probably 10x more about networking trying to get this game to work. I've never, ever seen a game that made me get into my modem and router settings in order to get it w

Got it! YES! It's working now! I had the DMZ of my DSL modem set incorrectly. I had it pointing to my computer's static IP instead of to my wireless router's IP. Again, thanks for the guide Monk. My only critique is that it assumes the user has some sort of intelligence, and makes him think about what he's doing and figure stuff out on his own a bit. I could handle that, though it took me some fiddling. Some people will just throw up their hands in frustration - they just want

Nah, I've had people try to join and be unable to. They can see the game, but not join it. I've discovered a few more steps to try, but they haven't helped. Monk, thanks for your guide, it made me realize I have to set my modem's settings as well as my wireless router. I just thought of something else to try. Be back.

OK, I'm at my wits end. I followed the guide for setting up a static IP. I changed the settings on my router to permit the proper ports, and I set those ports to redirect to my static IP. I made sure to permit both 6112 and 6000 just even though I wasn't sure I needed to do both of them. I made sure Upnp was enabled on the router (it was by default). Then I turned on Upnp on my computer. I used the Manager to turn on and set to Automatic both SSDP Discovery and Upnp device host
