Look at the colour of the phase lines between planets. This gives a visual clue of how far each players culture has spread.

Just played a game against two AI with the teams locked. It was REALLY EASY. Too easy. My main dislike of it was that i also can't set up alliances. I like to complete some missions for the weakest player then ally with them to team up against the strongest. Eventually the one i'm allied with becomes very strong so i due missions for someone else and team up against my old ally. Locking the teams completely removes this type of play.
Thanks for the advice, i have had some games where they all gang up on me. And a good medium sized map with some chokepoints is "Fulcrum".
I'm having a lot of difficulty taking on 2 or more hard AI players. I keep reading recommendations to play maps with chokepoints for easier defense. Could you guys please name some small and medium maps with good chokepoints? Thanks.
I've never attacked the pirate base, but from the number of pirate ships there it looks like it would be hard to conquer. Do you get anything for taking the pirate base? Once defeated do they disappear for good or pop up again later?
I really like the Sova Carrier as my first cap ship. Their embargo ability is very useful. I'll send one with a fleet of smaller ships into an enemy terran planet and steal 70% of the income. I wont' defeat the enemy ships, but that's ok. Once i start losing the smaller ships i leave the planet. It won't take me long to replace a few small ships (ie LRM's), but i will take their money and cripple their already weak economy.
If you try to build something you don't have the tech for, like a cruiser, go straight to the research screen. The tech you need for that item will be blue - has really helped me figure things out.
