Just to add my $0.02 to the mix, I usually play Advent and illum spam is definately something I do a lot, so I'll offer up what my fleet is usually composed of, as well as a response to some of the counter-strategies already posted. My fleet is usually composed of (just to give an idea) 120-200 Illuminators 30-50 Defense Vessles (anti-fighter/bomber) 30-40 Guardians 20-30 Subjugators Halycolon Carriers (Building Fighters only)

I like pirates because it adds a dimension to the game which is unpredictable, even for experienced players. They have their problems but hopefully they will get fixed in the future.
@ Sixhits Amish makes a good point about your Infrastructure strategy. This is only going to work on maps with many different ways to their homeworld (in most cases). Best-case scenario what you described is one of the best ways to slow down the production of Illuminators or simply cripple an Advent (or any player) early game. Worst case you lose your fleet. Hit and run tactics work in theory, severely crippling an opponent early game, but what if you end up walking into a trap? He is
Build a few military structures and get your LRM/Illum/Assailiants up. Don't waste much in the way of basic units before you get a planet. Your cap can cap the nearby roids by themselves so that'll free up a little income for the military structures. Also, scuttle your cap ship factory after you build your first cap, it sounds crazy but it really helps out with that extra income early on in the game. You really shouldn't need to cap more than 1 or 2 extra planets in order to get to the ships men
You wanna know the funny part of this post? I thought i was dumb for the longest time because I couldn't find the campaign. Then I decided...to hell with it I'm going to play a game. I fell in love, this game has the components of almost all RTS games that I enjoy without the parts that I despise. IE, I was huge into Starcraft back in the day, but playing through the campaign wasn't a very rewarding experience. I never even finished it. It was the online play that really gave the game its perks.
Thanks for all the positive responses so far, I see this has really become a conversation about how useful cap ships are in comparison to siege frigates. I'm really talking from the standpoint that I already have some useful Caps and I'm starting to go on an offensive. It slows down my advance when I have to sit in a gravity well for 5 or 10 minutes just bombing a planet using caps. I think that if you're spending your time using caps to bomb you'd benefit from making a few siege frigates bringi
So I've about go the hang of this game, but there are a few things that are giving me trouble. Mainly that goes with assulting planets other people control and it usually takes too long for me to destroy planets. Planet bombers are very expensive even compared to heavy cruisers. Using Cap Ships just seems to take too long to bomb a planet where I could use their support abilities elsewhere. This seems to give my opponents the excess time needed to rebuild their fleet and mount (a sometimes
Yeah I've been reading a lot recently about illum spams, it works out GREAT. Now my advent starts aren't as slow as they used to be. Even late game they are still amazing ships to have along side those heavies. Try it, you'll like it!
I am also fairly new at this game and have been playing only advent (there's something about the female voice that I like...) but I've found that Advent fighting against the other factions feels slow. I have been playing against the AI and I find that getting a strong foothold in the planets around your home is key. What you want to do is build 2-3 temples of harmony and get the culture bonuses around the outer systems. After that purge your resources into hostility, namely getting som
