Understood. I will note that I tried out the strikecraft addon and it did seem to reduce lag above and beyond the cargo ship reduction. Have yet to test on a large map with cruel AIs.

Doesn't a strikecraft reduction affect the utility of abilities like Flak Burst and Telekinetic Push?

The answer is still bombers. Flak to protect your own fleet and use your bombers to nuke the hangars then the SB. What faction are you playing? If Advent then TK push to defend your caps and shield bubble over the battle ball. If Vasari then abuse scramble bombers. You can also sacrifice a subverter or two to reduce shield mitigation then use an Egg for a final kill with the armor reducing ability (risky). For flak one option is to send them along the path the bombers take from th

Hmmm thansk for the tip Greyfox2. I think I have been using my illuminators wrong (i.e. long range fire) meaning I am not getting the benefit of the side cannons.

I have a question regarding the empire tree. Since tab only works for sub-selection when the empire tree is unstacked (right?), I find microing larger battles is best when stacking is turned off. But two things really annoy me. One is that once my fleet gets large, it is hard to select enemy targets as they are scrolled way off the screen. Two the darn empire tree jumps all over the place during combat, especially when I am tryiong to select bombers or fighters with the alt key.

Agreed, but sometimes I can skip the ice / volcanos in between, go all military labs, secure the chokepoints with some fleet + defenses + starbases, then fill in the ice / volcanos afterwards. Depends on the map though. I definitely agree that stretching too far gets you hammered in cruel. The big key for me is when I can get a trade network up. I have found many cases where if I withstand the first barrages from the AIs, then if I jump right away to trade, I get hammered in the next waves. N

If you can forego star bases, the AI (depending on its personality) can be challenging at higher levels (except for large maps). But if you build starbases then yes the AI dies like lemmings going over a cliff ... repeatedly.

Properly positioned and timed, repulse is amazing. Like N3rull stated not only an you basically negate HCs and LF, but you can really control the positioning of the battlefield while maintaing the integrity of your battle ball. You can absurdly frustrate the caps and cut off avenues of retreat and nullify kiting if you do it right. Obviously if you are heavy in strikecraft and LRM you can hammer the opponent at range with extreme prejudice. The exceptions are assailants with their nasty range

@PhoenixStormcrow: I'm curious ... when you talk about Advent vs cruel / vicious AIs, what do you consider a disciple rush? I don't consider 10 or so a rush. But 15+ is certainly a rush. Do you really build 15+ disciples before you go to carriers or illums? Just curious since, I've seen that tactic in MP but not much luck with it for me in single player.

first thing missing that came to mind is shield restore on a progenitor. vertigo is nice indeed (vengeance is useful with a radiance using animosity) just against strikecraft alone. malice + cleansing brilliance is nice but hard to pull off in MP (much easier to get working in single player). I never play TEC usually but I detest Armistice. Makes me want to smash things into my monitor screen. So it must be useful for the TEC player.

Thanks I have been doing both (ctrl groups with no fleets + using the zoom + setting the threat range). The problem with the latter is in a grav well where I am building a stream of new frigates. Gets really annoying to have to reset each time. On the other hand using ctrl groups is fine but can be a bit annoying playing at faster speeds when you have more than one battle front as you can easily forget to move one of the groups. Besides by the time I ctrl hotkey one or two 'factory' planets,

As a Vasari player I love being able to get my flak into the mix of things. They are amazing at absorbing damage. @Greyfox2; Any tips as an Advent player how to position illums in the battle ball to best exploit side beams? Is there a range / orientation requirement? The reason I ask is if I am getting forward beams only their dps is underwhelming until it is already too late in the game I find. Since as you said disciples are raped by assailants, do you still rush som

First, is there anyway to get the program to have newly made ships default to "Hold Position" or "Local" without using fleets. The 'Grav Well' setting is inane almost always for my play style. Second, is there a way to get fleets to operate such that they do not do all the 'moving to reform fleet' crud? 'Loose' doesn't seem to fix this no matter I try. Because of this I have basically been forced at higher play speeds to abandon fleets altogether which is a pain when you have lots of

It is taking me a while to get used to Faster. The beginning vs AIs can be a little daunting with so much scouting and so many fronts plus trying to cap asteroids with the colonizer-turret tactic. But once you get used to it ... it is hard to go back lol. I need more practice microing battles with it on Faster setting. Gets a little rough using overseers and subverters well. I might have to give up stacking in the empire tree. Its funny since going to faster speeds made me abandon fleets alto

No worries I am a bit nooby :) You might instead have to take it up with other people on the forum who do think a disciple rush is suicide vs higher level AIs, as I certainly didn't invent the concept. I of course build disciples early as Advent. What other choice is there? They are imo the best LF early on (skirmishers are reliable later on, in moderation). I also rush the frigate factory on maps like Point Blank, but at least for me disciples mean death if I don't switch to carrier

@Greyfox2: So are you suggesting to basically skip disciples (i.e. no rush then) and flak and focus on carriers (with bombers) and illuminators? Sadly I find the punch of illuminators quite lacking early on. What proportion of carriers to illuminators are we talking to go alongside your Halcyon?

Hmm thanks for the analysis. I guess I always gravitated to killing the LRM before the Hoshikos since like you said you are taking dps from the enemy and the hoshikos don't repair lrm well. I just never knew why I just found the battles went better lol. But if there are carriers and Kodiaks I always felt I had to do something about the Hoshikos or I take too long to shred his Kodiaks or Percherons which in turn rape my LRM. I will reconsider the hoshiko + cap scenario. I guess it make

Scramble Bombers needs a downgrade. Two Skirantra can field so many bombers + they can regen in a pinch. Plus good players know how to kite them well. They are broken as Pbhead already stated. Period. (Even though I will admit to abusing them as a VAsari myself). My issue when I watch some replays is some people have it down to a science to get two Skirantras online. They skip almost everything else just to get that 2nd Skirantra up and ready. While fighters + flak can counter the bom

@PhoenixStormcrow: By end game as Advent won't you always be pushing 100 bombers on a medium or larger map? As far as I am concerned the current vs of Diplomacy could be called Sins: World Of Bombercraft (at least for Advent and Vasari). If I am pushing 2000 logistics points then I will certainly be maxing out the beam line, especially for the range bonus. Primarily for the bombers. But then by that time illuminators are not terrible, so they have a place. And

I will admit I have never been on the business end of a Novalith barrage. But as long as I SB my key worlds where I am producing ships why would I SB all my planets? I have a few efficiently placed colonizers and if I lose a couple planets to Novaliths I wait till the dust settles and recolonize. Yeah it sucks but I don't need to SB every world. Yeah I lose income but you won't be able to colonize due to culture. And most of my income is from trade anyways. I am assuming I also have a
