I'm not a fan of the Core ix's in these types of applications. As awesome as they are, they have a much higher price to performance ratio and that performance isn't needed. I'm assuming he's not planning on running autocad or CS4 based on what OP said. Gaming, farting around interwebs, general computing (office etc) AMD is the way to go. More involved computing Intel, nvidya are necessary.

Not mentioned yet, but the cpu can probably be oc'd to 3.5-3.6 with the stock cooler. 3.5 quad 98 bucks. That's nice.

With ya 100 percent, quality hardware and sound advice, just trying to throw in something helpful. (and those setups should let him upgrade to a thuban in 3-4 months [e digicons]:D[/e] that and i was plssed off to no end trying to figure out my I couldn't get my 7cl ram to run at 7cl for the two weeks it took me to find out it was a cpu limitation)

The 5870 is 5/8s of an inch longer than a 260. Bah quote didn't work. I saw dethadder said it looked a smidge smaller. I had to cut reliefs in my hard drive cages when I replaced my GTX260s with my 5870s. (5870 CrossfireX am a suk atm)

I've screwed with this alot because I like playing huge maps against AI and I know it can be a pain in the ass later in game where you see GPU utilization at 20 percent and you are getting 25-30 FPS. All I can say is it's CPU bottlenecking. Make sure your northbridge is working with the RAM not against. On stock clocks i can play a huge multi random game against all ai, then the FPS shat the bed about 4 hours in. (20-25.) Bumping the northbridge from 2000 to 2400, reseting mem timings to 6clk
