Over here in germany, I got my box today as well. Payed 44.95$ initially (via Visa) and had to pay 19% Mehrwertsteuer (don´t know what this translates to in english) and 3.5% import tax. for a grand total of 7 €. Not too bad, I guess (actually benefited from the weak dollar LOL) 45$ as tax sounds ridiculous, that would be 100%. Whoa, talk about a rip off ;) Ralph Hoenig, Germany

[quote] On the allegience problem, the OP mentioned: As it is now, to take an earthern analogy, the US and, say, Jamaica, could support the same fleet (CVNs and all), if both spent 75% of their budget for it. This is clearly ridiculous. Just wanted to respond on this point, as I don't see it as valid. Both countries are vastly different in terms of size and raw material availability. In a fair comparison, eg the US and Russia, it makes m
On the allegience problem, the OP mentioned: How about being able to designate a (one) sector capital per system, that works as a 80% Homeworld (i.e. has allegiance 80%, next planets 70% and so on)? Both, the fixed cap and the fixed upkeep are plain stupid IMO. As it is now, to take an earthern analogy, the US and, say, Jamaica, could support the same fleet (CVNs and all), if both spent 75% of their budget for it. This is clearly ridiculous. Below
[quote]@ Kai Allard: Here's what i do on my vs 9 AI game. I suppose you can force the enemy to flee. I tend to do an counter-attack right after that and cripple them even more (drive them even futher away). If done really quick you could bombard their planet too, that is if your planetary defenses can defend alone for a while, risky tactic but worth it. They wont be back for a while giving you some time to build a secondary fleet at your main planet. "Cat & Mouse" tactic the AI uses is
I have to jump in here. I don´t have a whole lot of experience yet. My largest game so far is a mid sized (4 or 5 stars, some 7 or 8 grav wells per system) Normal game against 3 AIs. I am about midgame (fleet consists of 5 capitals and about 50 frigates in total). I own my star system and have maxed fortification on all planets next to the star and medium defenses on all other grav wells. Unfortunately, I simply can not go on the offensive against the AI, because the A
Confirmed, played the game to the end. Once the last planet of an enemy falls, all the culture is removed. This is managable on smaller maps (as the one I was playing), but on large ones, with no way to fortify conquered planets/asteroids? No way in hell
Ah, I see. Thanks
Ok, here goes: I´m playing a small, 1 star, 20 planets game against 2 AIs at normal difficulty to try out the new beta2 patch being attacked by both, the Korsul Armada and the Trade Coalition, I manage to stall the KorSuls at a chockepoint and fortify the planet. Then move my fleet towards the Trade Coalition. After neutralizing their main fleet, I attack their Homeworld and becaus all my sige frigates have bite the dust in the previous battle, it takes a while for my 5 capital
Another funny thing the AI did in my second game: I was attacking an enemy system with about 15 frigates, when the AI showed up with a fleet of equal size. Apparently, he had some additional tech levels, as he began to whipe the floor with my ships. Being deep inside the grav well, I decided to let my fleet (9 FFs left) go down fighten, dealing as much damage as they can and build another fleet in the neighbouring system, when all of a sudden, the clearly winning AI fleet (still 12 or 1
I agree with most of the above posters. The tech tree could use an expansion
Acer 5672WLMI Laptop Win XP Home Intel 1.66 Ghz Dual Core 1 Gig ram ATIMobility Radeon X1600 Running at 1200 x 800 gets sluggish as soon as I can actually see the ships. Running at 1024 x 768 runs fine until I zoom in on a battlegroup (3 to 4 capitals and a group of frigates). Then it gets sluggish again. Not an issue for me, as I play zoomed out anyway (As the leader of my empire, I don´t get payed to tell my starship captains how to do their jobs in battl
i think that when a fleet/ship jumps into a grav. well it should have to travel to the other jump point before it can jump on Absolutely. In my first testgame, I got the message of some inbound enemy vessles. I look at the system and see 3 or 4 enemy frigtes approaching. No problem, I think, there are 3 gauss and 2 hanger defense platforms between the jumppoint they are going to appear and the one leading deeper into my territory. <br/
Well my nick goes back a looooooong way to my active battletech times (tabletop, not comp-games). As this is more a sf-strategy board (as in comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strategic) than a btech board (as in rec.games.mecha), I thought something more recognizable to the masses as picture to be more appropriate. You do have apoint, however. Perhaps time to search the net? Ah no, too much hassle At least both

First off... If 50 dollars is a lot of money to you, you need to not be buying games, and save some money so that you can be in the situation where spending 50, 100, 1000, dollars is not a big deal. Or better yet buy a good book called "Rich Dad Poor Dad", it prolly cost around 10 bucks (its an older book) and learn about the true value of money, and learning to save so you can have money for the things you want. Well, fortunately, I am in
Well, you wont pay until the beta is released. Well, in a way we payed. You have to keep the money ready in your account, for the day it will be charged, so you can´t spent it for something else. But thats not the point. It has been anounced that this month, the beta will be published. If anything happens to delay this, wouldn´t it be prudent to tell the customer about it? Of course, this is all a little premature, as there a
I absolutely agree with Schemanticsninja. While I appreciate eye-candy like everyone else, The Game comes first with eye-candy a distant second. This is a strategy game, after all, so I don´t want to watch a video/slide show, I want to play! Just my 2 cent Ralph Hoenig, Germany
Ok, as we are already as far off topic as it possibly gets, I´ll add my memories too First game ever played was Elite (the first, original one, you know, CGA graphics with 4 colors at a whooping resolution of 320 x 200 pixles) on an Amstrad PC 1512 with, you guessed it, 512 kb ram and twin 360kb floppy drives (no, no harddisk at all) and at a whooping 8Mhz back in 1986 or 87. Ah, where
Hopefully, there is no automatism in this. I, for one, want the english version, as most of the time (95+ %) the translation for games sucks (same goes for most movies especially comical ones, where a lot gets lost in the translation) Ralph Hoenig, Germany
Ah, the memories of youth (as far as I *can* remember) . So, am I amongst the methusalems around here (43) Ralph Hoenig, Germany
I could, of course, name windows, which most of us are kind of beta testing as the longest beta ever. However, VGA Planets 4 if *officialy* in beta for 5 years now Granted, given the quality of games nowadays, most companies would have slaped the gold sticker on this game more than 2 years ago, as there are only very minor bugs (IMO) and some balance issues left. But the game keeps getti
Am beta testing VGA Planets 4 (the longest beta test ever) in the 5th year and still testing
Ahem, the above was sarcasm. I realy thought my phrasing would make this absolutely clear, apparently I was wrong. Please read my posting again. As I stated there, the above is a quote I posted on a newsgroup on that topic, so OP is aimed at the guy starting the topic there, not you. PS: Yes, I could have edited the post somewhat more, but I am lazy, so sue me.
I know I´m a bit late. This is what I posted on the Comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strat newsgroup: As another German I want to jump in here too. Yes, there is a proposal from the Innenminister (I don´t know what the english word for this one is) of Bavaria to make making, selling and playing so called Killerspiele (Killergames) illegal. However, this is not exactly the same as a legislative effort to make this a law tomorrow. He himself said, this is meant as a
