Ah. I did a fair bit of modding for Age of Wonders 2 a while back, which is also turn-based. Incidentally, also a very hardcode-heavy game (The AI was completely hardcoded, even moreso than sins). So, it's quite possible I might look into GC3 when it's available.

Someone linked me a video on that new engine (I guess it's for GC3? I haven't kept up with their newer titles). It was being developed as a toolset/engine independent of any specific game but designed towards space RTS in the vein of Sins, I think. It's using Mantle, so it has quite a lot of processing power behind it. If it's a toolset along the lines of Unity or the UDK, sins will be incomparable to it in any shape or fashion. But yeah, you've got the idea. Modd

I would expect indie developers to be the least lazy because they are inclined to compete with larger studios who greatly prefer quantity over quality. It's not about making the AI moddable. Most companies who claim to be making something "moddable" don't even know what modding is. It's just about common sense and respecting one's own work, planning for the future, etc. No doubt in my mind they were simply lazy.
Is there any reason why the devs don't make the AI substantially easier to Mod? I'm thinking the StarCraft AI tournament or Sorian AI for SupCom
Quite simply, due to laziness. Hardcoding the AI is the fastest, easiest way to get something done. It just so happens it makes expanding the game infinitely more difficult, not simply for developers but for anyone else. Sins was never built with exp

I finally figured out how to make gifs again. So here's a look at a Phase 8 type fumeFX test sheet, animated. This is a rejected variant; I have better ones. They are used for creating animated sheets that are then used to create Sins and, eventually, UDK particles.

In my project I get a minidump 9/10 games within a few seconds after loading or starting a game. It's entirely random, unpredictable, and I've tried to isolate its cause countless times. I simply credit it to hardcode interactions. if it doesn't crash, the game is perfectly stable for the remaining however long I leave it running. While possibly unrelated to your crash, it's worth considering. Major crash causes in my experience are roletype/statcounttype changes that

I'm interested to know what researches I can delete from the research list without the AI crashing. I tried purging everything but the crew/supply limits and planet unlocks but, yeah. My goal is to purge every single research I possibly can so that nothing affects stats in any possible way. I've manually changed a lot of researches, but there's still a bunch I've probably missed. It'd just be cleaner to gut them from the start.

I try not to use mirroring as much as possible, but yeah, it does stand to reason that mirror/duplication might be causing more issues than just with the hardpoints. I hadn't thought about that. As long as this solution works to resolve any future issues, it should shave a lot of time off of getting the remaining models to be made into sins. I'm nearly ready to rig the few 4th gen ships I have finished.

Time for another post. This isn't an update per se, but rather research related. I hope it can be of assistance to anyone who encounters the same issues I have. If you're lucky, your lowrider only takes a leap off the bridge and you are offered a relatively quick end. If not, you spend days/

Recently, in Coffee Hour 14, I demonstrated what will likely be the last major public showing of the project until it's finished, predicted to be 2015. I explained to my audience the revision process more thoroughly than what has been shown in previous demos, and also shows a ton of new stuff that hasn't been shown at all, yet. Compared to the previous major videos, including that particle demo, the elements shown here are significantly more refined. If you're interested,

At the least quadruple the texture resolution so it isn't blurry. Then extrude everywhere.

I own a tablet now. While far from being able to produce the furry porn that all self-entitled artists eventually find themselves sucked into, I find a tablet way easier than a pen to use and I can do better than what I did 15 years ago. A little attempt at a concept of a counterweighted first-gen Royal crew pistol. An idea of the kind of props I might attempt to model, and may even attempt to texture, during the UDK aspect of this pro

My mod is set to highest settings and has over 360 textures and 800mb+ of meshes. No memory crashes currently. If you know what you're doing, I'd recommend cloning your sins directory and go about gutting things the mod isn't using. Not being a developer of the mod, it might take you some time to figure that out, though. A good place to start is the textures for default ships, planets, and any skyboxes that might not be used. I've personally removed half the UI, the player por

There is a statcounttype for utility0 and utility1. I certainly expect it to become unstable without one of them.

The game will crash if you remove a unique roletype such as that support roletype and the hardcoded AI looks for it.

Even though I had pneumonia I was still gearing up for hopefully making some big swings on the project's script. Here are some test recordings just for the internal demo videos I hand out to internal viewers. https://soundcloud.com/iskatumesk/ret-record-practice-1

They should make sure it tells the all-important love story, too! The love triangle of Kerrigan, Zeratul, and Raynor is the most incredible writing in the history of gaming! Will she fall for the rough, burly redneck who hides a deadly secret about a drunken night a certain Horner, or the limitless stamina of the plant-man who succumbs to a single drop of alcohol on his forehead? Next time, on Dragonball Z... Oh wait, you're a necromancer. The last time I had dealings with a necro
