"Little Star" here. While I'm far from pro, I'd be willing to pay it forward and devote whatever time I can to answer questions for new players even if it's just about my experience so far with the community etc. Obviously the disclaimer is that I'm still being mentored so it's mostly basics, but if anybody just wants another player on their friends list add OckhamzRazor on Steam. Good luck with the program... I can attest that it works!

Fantastic and it works! Really helps shorten the learning curve and quickly get you up to speed past the awkward "wandering around lost" phases.
Personally I think something like this is a great idea. I'm one of the newer players from another RTS that has put a lot of hours into watching replays and reading as much as I can from the forums... and certainly there is some expectation that new players will try to help themselves as well. However, I wouldn't be half as good as I've gotten (still not that great ;) if it weren't for people like StarPlayer, RedRuby, and many other community members that have exc
OK, one last replay link before I get some feedback... and only because I actually won in this particular game. http://www.2shared.com/file/7s7Krg-J/AutoRecord-01062326.html Was in eco, so didn't see a ton of action. Fed my teammates mostly, and by the time I got my Titan up and ready to push with it, they called GG.
Another skilled 5v5. Still feel like i'm improving, if only in baby steps. I still think positional play is something i need to work on and not getting my Caps focus fired down :/ http://www.2shared.com/file/NKiAuFR0/AutoRecord-01061441.html Please any feedback on this or my previous replays would be appreciated. Seems that Ruby is in the middle of some life shit, but I know there
Ok here's another multiplayer game for review. It's a respectable showing in a skilled 5v5 game. http://www.2shared.com/file/1oU0BKsg/AutoRecord-12302129.html Since I tend to push out aggressively at the beginning, I've been able to force my opponents into a defensive position forcing SBs etc. My question is, how to I properly capitalize off of this monetary and positional advan
Thanks Ruby. I appreciate that when you critique you focus on solutions and not just problems. Too many people just say that you did this and that wrong, and never really say what the right thing should be and how to improve. Here's another one that I played with some guys from the SoSE group on Reddit. It was a 8 player FFA iirc and was my first FFA so I opened fast culture instead of aggression since I figured the people here weren't going to be ultr
Ok so here's my 2nd 5v5. http://www.2shared.com/file/7iZQySGf/AutoRecord-12212142.html So here are my thoughts: 1. I'm so pissed because I feel like I opened pretty well and even with the rediculous three jumps without a planet I arrived at the pivotal choke before my opponent and had a chance to take it and probably win, but forgot to research ice! WTF! I feel like that&#
... oh do go on Greg! (although that's not really your name right ;) Actually I was just thinking recently that i'd like to be good enough to go random eventually... maybe by the time factions are more balanced. However I'm probably putting the cart before the horse a little, as I should focus on getting at least pretty good at one faction at a time. That way each time I switch I'll learn the next one even more quickly and efficiently. Also if you&#
Ok, here's the 5v5 that they graciously let me participate in. This is ultimately where I want to be playing so all guidance is appreciated. I've been so focused on being aggressive and military that I was a little unprepared for my eco role but I learned a lot just from this game... apparently not how to set a good waypoint though :/ http://www.2shared.com/file/AiKI5P_D/AutoRecord-12081434.htm
Ok so after a lot of reading through the forums, and some great advice/coaching from the community, I finally waded into the multiplayer end of the pool. This 1v1 and the following 5v5 are my first games played vs actual human opponents. Having said that I think I played respectably, but obviously still have a lot to learn so please give as much constructive criticism as would be helpful. I ask just one thing... since I'm assuming I'll get quite a bit of stu
Seen so many regulars open with 1 civ lab 1 mil lab as TEC without scuttling capital factory. Getting stomped in less then 5 minutes because they're going civ tech and they got 1 factory because no logistic slot for 2nd. Getting stomped coz they can only field less then half of the numbers of corvettes their opponent is fielding. Scuttle cap fac, stick to 2 factories and avoid getting civ labs untill you can do a successfull r
Ok so I've landed on Advent and have made a lot of progress conceptually from replays, and great instruction from the forum member. Now I guess it's time to start playing and get some real experience. My steam profile name is OckhamzRazor if anyone else would like to help forge me into a lethal multiplayer weapon of mass destruction... or something like that... I live on the east coast of US so EST. Usually play at nights.
Level 3 trade, no trade upgrades, and resource focus is absolutely pathetic. Quick culture can be nice to put pressure on a close enemy, but it doesn't compensate economically for the trade disadvantage.
So does that make them the worst eco race, or is that still vasari because of trade at level 4? Also, with Advent, would you normally skip culture and go right to trade? Does either have a fundamental flaw that makes
Ok so I haven't played Sins since Vanilla and now that I picked up Rebellion, I want to get good enough to play online. I was masters level in SC2 so I have some experience with strategy games online, but this is obviously very different from SC2. Anyway, I'm at like square 0 at this point, which is just trying to settle on a main faction and maybe an alt. I'm not into TEC at all so it's between Vasari and Advent. Even if it's not as balanced righ
Ok so it sounds like TEC can be competitive if you really take advantage of your assets and try to widen any margin that you begin with. It seems like you probably need a more balanced fleet than the other two factions while trying to tech up to kodiacs asap. I guess the only question left unanswered is whether I should be making Hoshikos... [e digicons]o_O[/e] Thanks for the added info about the demo bots btw. So far I just can't ever decide if I should be g
Ok, so I've posted personal improvement threads on Advent and Vasari already and with both of those factions I had a clear goal in mind. Advent = Progen/Halcyon, and Guards all in support of Lums... pretty much typical battle ball. Vasari = everything phase missle.... upgrades, assailants, flak, transporters, Egg, and subverters. I've played with the TEC a good handful of times now and the best way I can explain it is it's like dating someone because they have a
I second that Btec! Great guide, thanks!
Sorry it took so long to reply, and I really appreciate the information folks! Darvin, thanks for the information about the Enslaved Labor (which i've heard more than once was great to have) and putting my worries to rest about the transporters. And the shield upgrades not being worth it... these are the subtleties that I was hoping for. Volt your combo post was hysterical... I can just picture the nervous laughing with the shifty eyes. Alas, I have yet to ge
So the Advent thread was very helpful and apparently still popular but I have moved on. Now I am playing Vasari and would like to know how my current strategy sounds and get some less well known ideas that really set the good players apart from the average players. Well everything about my vision for my Vasari play revolves around phase missles and they're upgrades. I always take the Egg first and a few skirmisher to quickly colonize and then mass assailants
I completely agree with everything! Just be ready to act when the patch is released.... when will that be anyway? [e digicons]k1[/e] ... more to come if you follow through.
Ok... DesConnor obviously knows more than me about the logistics of setting up a successful replay thread, so I defer to him. If you can distinguish between a critique thread and a pro thread that would be ideal.
If it doesn't exist but you think it should, then make it yourself. One of the best parts about a forum.
Well at first I thought that I'm too new and really don't have any replays to contribute at this point... but I think i'll do it anyway. Thanks for the motivation!
Also, I'd really like to watch some videos of higher level people to get better. I'm a little surprised that this forum doesn't have a dedicated video thread of higher level play. I know that Ke5trel has a stickied thread with replays but ... Actually, while i'm on the subject, there should really be a "Critique my replay" thread so that noobs like me can have people actually pick something concrete about my play that they think should be improved. Also, I
