So I should log into steam, buy trinity, and I would have full game experience including patches and not buying the game again?

So, I got this game a while ago, simply by walking into a store, seeing it, and buying it. I like space. First things first, I tryed the diffrent races in singleplayer and quickly figured out that I like advent most. And the game in general. After trying to play online, I figured out I had a big problem. Short, you guessed it, it didn't work. Long, I soon figured out I don't even know wich version of this game I have. reading some forum posts, either these post
