Just to comment to DirtySanchez, for what's worth, when Rebellion was officially released, there are over 1000 players on line for a few days. In comment to the general theme of this thread: how to bring in new players. In my opinion, there are two types of new players. Case #1: Dialogue: VeteranPlayer: you didn't have a great game. You want some tips on how to improve? New Player: sure, that'd be great. This is th

I have to say that I am in a minority on Wail. I myself mostly play TEC, and I therefore do not play with Wail. I play against Wail. At first, I found it totally overwhelming. But now I have adapted strategies and compensations, and I find that Wail, though certainly powerful, adds an extra dimension of strategy to the game. You can't just "make a huge fleet and kill everyone". You have to think more, you have to anticipate more, most of the new so-called "OP" things require this adaptati
I must say I almost agree with this report. But the problem is that you have really missed the entire point. What is needed for balance is that the Orkulus must have a zero cooldown kostura cannon that takes no antimatter. That small change would finally balance the VR faction and people would then really start to play it in ICO. I cannot remember even once seeing VR played in ICO during last two months. Come on, devs, give the VR a needed buff, pleeeeze!! I thought SINS Rebellion was suppose
Great set of updates for 1.04. If I put myself in the ICO chair and ask, "What race would I wanted to play?," three things come to mind based on this update: 1. I might not actually want to be VL. STTC is not really a viable strategy any longer, except for scorched earth policy (which has its place). There are still a lot of good things for VL, so I still might want to be them. It means I'd rotate among VL, TR, TL, and AR. That's a good thing. 2. Notice that I didn'
It is no secret that the TEC Loyalists are quite out of favor on ICQ. What needs to be done to make them a competive choice again? The post is very good and informative. I need to disagree with the central thesis, however. In fact, some excellent players do choose TEC Loyalists. I was surprised aboutey this, so I thought about it for a while. I prefer TEC rebels myself. But why do excellent players choose the

Indeed, how nice to have a positive post. Refreshing. With enough of these, maybe the Devs will start reading the forums... This could be our reverse-psychology strategy to get the things we want. [e digicons]:D[/e]
So, has everyone forgotten the original mission statement/advertisement for SINS from its original release version? It was supposed to fill the niche of either (1) bringing some RTS players to hardcore 4X players or (2) bringing some 4X elements to hardcore RTS players. It was supposed to build a new kind of community. In this regard, you have to regard it as achieving its stated goals admirably. Note the numerous posts in this thread of type #2, i.e., many RTS players stating they'd neve

This is a question of kind of like, "How old are you?" Ok, my first one was Ohio Scientific, casette tape drive for storage, 20 characters on the screen, opened with a hexadecimal user interface in upper right corner. Circa 1977 (?). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_Scientific
I find fighting "fire with fire" helps. That is, when a player won't quit but instead walks away from the keyboard and just leaves my allies and me sitting there... hoping we will quit... I then get pissed off, then stay calm, then go to bed. Usually I come back 15-18 hours later, and by then the non-quitting player has quit. [e digicons]:D[/e] That is always very satisfying. By the way, what do you have to do to actually defeat the bad guys.... killing

My own calculations come up with a much different value that often plays in favor of the refinery. Usually credits are used to purchase metal or crystal. So, for 4 logistics slots, you can get one refinery or one trade port. If you want to buy 100 metal, y

My hint to the DEVs on the minidump mystery would be to focus on differences between 1.02 and 1.03. I had nearly zero minidumps with >50 games on 1.02. With version 1.03, minidumps are frequent (not as frequent as beta version, but quite frequent). So what was change for 1.03?
You have to see what you're up against to decide. If enemy has bombers and you're trying to defend a titan or capitals, you'd better have an equal number of fighters (or so). Leftovers can go to bombers. If enemy has skipped on bombers, then put all of your stuff into bombers. What's great about carrier fleets is that you can switch up and adapt to your enemy by turning fighters into bombers or bombers into fighters. That kind of flexibility can be very important.

In no particular order other than the amount of integrated time I have spent with these games: Master of Orion 2 (no further comment needed on this one: just fantastic; too bad none of the new genre in this 4X vein allow similar tactical combat; you could really do some master attacks) Civilization 2 (Civ IV and gasp Civ V have a lot to recommend and I have spent much time with them but Civ 2 was the most ahead of its time at the time) European Universal
I was going to spend a sober night in the house with SINS but now it looks like beer and bars.
So this is an attention issue, not a balancing issue. Do you disagree?
I don't disagree about my inattentiveness, though I would say there's not too much incompetence on my part. I mean that 20 siege frigates on your planet don't give you too much time to be aware if you're off fighting a battle somewhere else. Those siege frigates did through your planet in a moment's notice, and it'
Since the question was posed, I'll give my answer: certainly siege do not need a buff! As it is, an enemy makes 15-20 siege frigates and creams through a few of your planets before you can get your act together, e.g., if those siege frigate comes through a wormhole. I'm often off focusing on the frontiers and only belatedly notice my planets going down; even if I do notice, I lose one before I can get auxiliary fleet up. I've been using scout fleets against siege fleets;
The changes to Vasari Loyalist are important. I think it remains to be seen if they're enough but perhaps they will be. For comparison, the TEC who get Pervasive Economy effectively can fleet to enormous size. But getting all of those upgrades are expensive and time-consuming. If the Vasari Level 8 for STTC is equally expensive and time-consuming, there could possibly be reasonable match between TEC and Vasari Loyalist, though that would have to be battle tested for sure. &n
Thanks for the post, Greg!
I think corvettes have reached a good balance point and don't need to be changed much from here. They are indeed "the" unit at the beginning of the game but people who know how to play the game don't get overrun by them. You just have to start every game thinking "I am going to get attacked by a swarm of corvettes." Then you are fine. You have options: build your own corvette fleet, start a flak defense, go for a starbase, or [imagine this] scout your opponent to see what he's up
I sat in my corner, not even really doing any diplomacy, storing up the resources to build starbases and novalith cannons and a titan. So, that is your main problem against unfair AI. I have found that the only way to beat unfair AI soundly is to take a two prong simultaneous approach: (1) early, you can take out one unfair AI but "push, push, push", meaning being very aggressive; (2) next, you must make friends through diplomacy w
