Did we just missunderstand you, or did you somehow completely miss all the ravings about multiplayer?
That's common to happen at this stage, unless you go and read all the previous journals. It happened to me as well. Having that in mind, I'd say to just point people in the right direction, since what would be obvious to some isn't for others.
Doing an option for turn based and another for real-time is essentially developing 2 engines with AI that can work under either.
I understand your point, though I was thinking more on a modding perspective. By introducing a "cheat" in the movement cap (I've done that for fun in Civ IV and Gal Civ II) with a limited number of elements in play and mod-like changes, in theory a "real-time" result could be obtained for a new form of multiplayer experience.
aLap, I think you more or less missed the whole point of what Sins did and what Elemental is going to do
I'm certainly not a purist, and like when developers succeed on pushing a game genre forward. I saw a possibility with multiplayer, that's all, and I hope to see an innovative spirit with Elemental in one way or another. If not... I'm sure that we'll still have a good game to play.
But we are still pushing to have an Alpha build on June 25th to give out. It’ll be cloth map only (so what you see in the above screenshot won’t be in the alpha series and the betas will look a lot better than what you see above too). We’re pretty excited because we plan to do this somewhat differently than other builds.
It is an opportunity to be different since, for one, the feedback is limited with wha
Sins is not a turn-based game... What, exactly, has it shown to be possible that is in any way relevant to a turn-based strategy game?
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/sins-of-a-solar-empire/850906p1.html Once upon a time there were "4X" turn-based strategy games and real-time strategy games and the two philosophies behind them couldn't have been more different. A "4X" game is all about the big-picture: building an empire
Will we or will we not be able to play E:WoM multiplayer games outside the confines of dedicated Stardock servers?
In regards of LAN? I don't see the problem of being outside of it. As for anything WAN, you can get SD's servers to facilitate all kinds of different online playing experiences.
Isn't Elemental a turn-based 4x game? I don't play those kinds of games online, so not having bots would render it unplayable for me. Also Demigod is in a completely different genre so it would be insane at best to make game design decisions like that based off of it. It's just a bizarre thing to do.
The reference from my initial post was taken out of context and it might be misleading... As I gathered from the Elemental f

So, here's what I think that could be done about the Bots and overall gameplay... 1. Issue commands On right-click (or whatever makes more sense) , a menu opens up with a list of requests that could be heard by allies (or just by using shortcut keys): - Need help! - Do not cross enemy territory - Destroy enemy defenses - Capture flags 2. Ability to call targets: hold down control and select targets, which

Seems like a mix of Caesar (in a lesser extent), Civilization, Heroes of Might and Magic, and Spore's simplification qualities to bind them all together. Of course that Elemental will have its own unique blend and hopefully with a better result than Spore's. I'm just using these past examples to try and get a reference of what to expect. Maybe other games can be better used as reference examples? :)
Sigh. Bot != AI. There will be AI in this game. Of course there will be AI. A couple posts back someone else said more or less the same as you just did, so I guess I'll repeat my response... The bots he was talking about were the proposed persistent bots that would have their own stats, and join games like people would. Apparently they were hated in Demigod, so they've been axed for Elemental.
So, there will be
AI has no place in competitive multiplayer. Bad AI has no place anywhere.
Well. this is not exactly an MMO, so maybe you're right. In comparison, what do I know or understand about Demigod? Hopefully the bots would've been improved, but since everyone hates them, might as well remove them all together. I also see a lot of NO NOOBS comments in the custom games. I think that's the wrong idea. Some of the noobs actually want to become pros. What it should be say

What is true is that Demigod offers little more than direct observation of the opponent's movements. There's no quick references, but a slow and painful process of gaining experience. I hate that in a game. Guild Wars, on the other hand, is a game that I gradually learned to master, and though I was being owned at the beginning, I knew what they were throwing at me. In Guild Wars, if you click on an opponent, you can see their health bar and an icon of

Well, this link here kind of expresses my initial reaction of playing the game before being heavily patched... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCunixAzHOA&feature=related Get the game when the price drops. By that time, it will be working at its best.

So, "reasonable" players are able to spam kill a bot and get overpowered. The same would happen with a noob. Bots are dumb, but so is a noob. This game is definitely catered for more than casual players and it was my mistake to think otherwise. The message on the wall is if a player doesn't have time to invest in this game and learn its quirks, you'd better stay off it. That's what I will do. Trying to catch up with things only on weekends doesn't seem to be eno

It still amazes me how it got so well received by critics despite all the stupid bugs. That's all I'll say about the unfortunate game I bought. Yes, you need Steam for updates and first time activation.
Demigod’s impact on Elemental 2. I’m killing off the bots concept. People hate them. I thought they were cool but they’re too much work only to be hated. Note : persistent bots were planned to be included in some areas of the game, besides the normal AI that would always be necessary for a game like Elemental to work.
I get the impression you're misunderstanding what he meant by bots. You will be able to play multiplayer games with AI players, and there will probably be the option to replace a dropped player, or a player who left the game, with an AI. I'm a bit late to this train, and I didn't went through all pages, but here's my two cents anyway...
That said, here are a few things that multiplayer in Elemental will have: 1. Multiplayer games will be hosted by us. Period. No peer to peer. Not even hosted on the user’s box. Our servers. No ports, no proxies, nothing. We’re hosting it.
Excellent. Depending on peer-to-peer for multiplaying sucks an awful lot for

Considering the developing curve of any game, it will be interesting to see what will actually get included into this one. Room needs to be given for expansions, and time is always short to make a game perfect. What I'm particulalry looking forward to is to be actively engaged in the BETA. I usually see games in the eyes of a non-hardcore gamer. Elemental is a kind of game that I'm especially drawn to. I've played so many already that it would be interesting to
