To be honest with you, I think after a couple of hours of trying to get Mass Effect to work, you should have gone back to whoever sold you the game & demanded your money back. If you'd bought it online, then I would have sent it back to the seller and put a complaint into the credit card company (if possible) asking them to withhold payment as the game was "not fit for purpose".
