Yes, I would like to hear Brad's take on how this "changes" the gaming industry. The Gamasutra article does talk about the microtransactions, but I'd argue that it sounds like Brad doesn't quite know yet what they're going to do with Demigod. That article is [link="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18124"]here[/link]. -HM

Sounds like Stardock has exclusive publishing rights: "Not only do we have a proven retail publisher, but we get to partner with a pioneer in the digital distribution space...a company that totally understands what kind of experience our customer wants and the quality game they demand," said Gas Powered Games founder and CEO Chris Taylor. I do not see anything whatsoever on the official Demigod site which implies that this is a subscription based title. It does say that GPG is self-publishing though, so it will be interesting to discover if Stardock is now the retail box publisher (or just online). -HM
I think the only other thing I've seen on Totalgaming that's a bit more mainstream is Painkiller, but their developer, People Can Fly, is not as well known as Chris Taylor/Gas Powered Games. -HM
I don't know, there's nothing about that article that's making me think that someone else is publishing the retail box. Plus it has the line "When quizzed about what Stardock's "new type of developer/publisher model" means for fans of Gas Powered Games' older titles..." Which sure makes it sound like Stardock is the exclusive publisher for Demigod. We need more information. -HM
Sorry for the double-post. Got the forum went "boom" message, so thought it didn't post. -HM
Ceylin already said what it is. Fits exactly what Brad said in the podcast: game from another developer. And unlike him, I have no problem [link="http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/04/stardockdemigod.html"]publishing the link[/link]. -HM
Fascinating, since [link="http://www.gaspowered.com/newsletters.php?newsID=39"]this[/link] says they originally going to self-publish. -HM
I find [link="http://www.gaspowered.com/newsletters.php?newsID=39"]this[/link] interesting because ti sounds like they were originally going to self publish the game. -HM
Brad already said on his GFW podcast that it will be a game published by them, but developed by some other house. You can already download Impulse if you want to try it: [link="http://storage.stardock.com/files/Impulse_setup.exe"]http://storage.stardock.com/files/Impulse_setup.exe[/link] -HM
I'm pretty darn sure that according to the GFW podcast Brad said they were announcing a new game developed by someone else. -HM
Space Ponies? -HM
The older standalone patches had no prior version requirement. But I suspect, considering the last standalone patch spread far and wide, that 1.04 will only be available via SDC and Impulse. At least if Ironclad and Stardock are on the ball it will only be available that way. -HM
[link="https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/305609"]Here's[/link] the thread. -HM
Yes, there are posts on the subject, but they may be buried by now. It's a known bug and has already been fixed for 1.04 (due next week). -HM
As of now it's [link="http://www.amazon.com/Sins-of-a-Solar-Empire/dp/B000YFOGS8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1207253968&sr=8-1"]$29.99 at Amazon w/free ship[/link]. I suspect they'll raise the price again when Best Buy's sale is over. -HM
0wnt back at ya: when Annatar11 pointed out a typo of mine the other day. ;) I wonder why 1.04 got pushed back. Ah well, except for the problem where re-loading a saved game tends to lose the initial settings, it works well for me. Oh, and the problem where my ships like to stand there and NOT auto-engage the turrets at the pirate base... -HM
You don't have to be connected to the Internet to play SP Steam games. Go into the Steam options, check the appropriate boxes to have Steam cache your user information, and it'll work fine if you're offline (Steam will launch in offline mode). -HM
Yep, most definitely! -HM
If you go by the statistics, fighters do best against frigates (with the exception of the standard offense frigate, which is better attacked with an LRM ship) and bombers do well against structures and the heavy assault cruiser. Checking out this spreadsheet will help: [link="http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p7xc_snd9Cc-6o2UwvPEWUg&gid=0"]http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p7xc_snd9Cc-6o2UwvPEWUg&gid=0[/link] -HM
They're yanking your chain. If Stardock's programmers are worth anything, they're using a scheme that cannot be easily cracked, and the chances of randomly, or hitting upon a serial with a brute force attack, that will work on Ironclad Online is impossibly slim. The chances of hitting a number that someone else has registered would also be impossibly slim. -HM
This isn't going to happen. As I said earlier, I was all for it in Linux, and proudly bought Linux ports. But the user base wasn't enough to justify the games being made, so after a couple of years it dried up. I believe the same is mostly true for Macs. There aren't enough Mac users, and the gamers who own Macs is even smaller, so you aren't going to see a lot of developers bothering. The only way this is going to change is if Apple manages to get a humongous number of people to bu
If it took [B]two weeks[/B] to beat the AI on unfair, then I'd say there's a strong argument to leave it as is. -HM
Oops; thank to Annatar for fixing my typo. I'm writing too fast and too much. I think it's way too optimistic to expect that there would be a Mac version of the game by the end of the year, considering it was only one interview where the brothers tossed out the possibility of it happening. Right now I suspect they're far too busy with the patching, plus thinking about an expansion, since the game is selling incredibly well. And kryo makes a good point about the website. If S
