What would be an interesting test is to make a benchmark save game which has the maximum number of units that is still playable either doing simple movement orders or a battle. Then we can see if beta 4 and beyond does any better at handling large fleets.

I ran some performance monitoring tests as you see above: - SoaSE is actually using 15 threads - Some strange results regarding CPU utilisation, as you see no single core is maxed out at 100%, but the CPU % time of the SoaSE process is close to 100%

Will SoaSE ever support multiple threads, does anyone know? On a side note I think this is a really positive demonstration of what might be... I mean how original would that be to have fleet battles with unit numbers ranging in the 10's of thousands. It plays a little better without the UI, but still like 1fps. SoaSE uses 25-30% CPU utilisation on one core not 100% on 1 of 4 when running your save game.

It runs really slow on my QuadCore @ 3.2GHz + 8GB RAM + 8800 GTX KO SoaSE was only using around 1GB of RAM & barely 25% of the total CPU power. The bottleneck is somewhere in the code I think, obviously not designed to handle so many objects as is or in that manner. How do you disable the UI? I'll have another go without it.

Unless of course you limit their numbers, so only x-1 Minbari Heavy Crusiers are allowed vs. x+1 Earth Alliance Destroyers. As long as you aren't going to include their homeworlds its a plausable scenario. The HW2 mod which allowed you to play the other more powerful race(s)from the single player game basically did that... I forget its name X-mod or something like that.. What would really be cool is with the Vorlons & Shadows as Pirate replacements so you could ally yourself wi

Guys it was a story, and good story telling at that nothing more. Just assume there was a reason and they simply didn't cover it in that episode.

I am on about my 7th 1 vs 1 AI game now, the lastest game was against a hard AI with the latest beta3 patch. - The AI expanded rapidly to other systems this time, much faster than I did. - My first encounter was a capship battle with the AI having more frigs but me having the stronger capship... The AI did something smart when it was losing it phase jumped to an adjacent system and when I followed it the damn thing jumped back again, and again and again. Now whilst you could argue t

If you look at the end of game economics you dont actually get great rewards for external expansion (human) vs. captial planet investment (AI). Unless I am reading the stats wrong the AI seems to do 'not as bad as you might expect' on the economics & resource front.

On to my 2nd game now, and some more observations: - When you 'right-mouse click' pan the camera angle, the cursor creeps in the direction you are viewing. This can be anhoying because as the cursor creeps towards the edge of the screen the view starts to slide in that direction and you lose focus on whatever object you were originally panning the camera angle around. - The easy CPU AI is too easy it simply has no chance of winning unless you go afk or commit suicide. HW2 starting position, nothing special @ 1024x768 vs. SoaSE Beta1 tutotial starting position @ 1280x1024 (resized to 1024x768 for comparison) Is SoaSE 'looking' (remember we are not making any gameplay comparisons here) like a game 4 years ahead?

After a bit of a break I've fired up Beta2 for another look at SoaSE. Now I've always liked the in game effects, but the models haven't really moved on. To quote one of our TFL forum members when I posted an image of HW2 vs. SoaSE (beta1): 'tbh I prefer the HW2 screenshot'. I'm gonna just say this right off the bat without meaning to cause offence, 'Come 2008 are we likely to see significantly updated ship models (comparable to X3 & Eve e.g 'http://img256.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hamm

ok whats changed other than the SDC update? cos I have been away for 1 week, fire up 0.62[b].010 having changed nothing on my PC and its working now .

Yes I did mean 0.62[b].010 well spotted. I double click on the SoaSE shortcut, a black window flashes up and then closes by itself after 1-2seconds returning me to the desktop. There are no dialogs or prompts regarding minidumps, if I look in the minidump directory they are all zero byte files but do correspond to the correct time/date of trying to run SoaSE. I can at any time uninstall 0.62[b].010 from SDC, delete the C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Ironclad Games

I have tried restoring from an archive, I haven't done a complete install over the Internet again. I might give it a go when my PC is free for a few hours... I only have a 512kb connection so it takes a while.

21 Replies 5,891 Views

I can run 0.60[b].004 but I can't run 0.60[b].010, any chance of some help please I've sort of exhausted all efforts to get it working. I tried taking a backup of the C:\Documents and Settings\ \Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire folder which I know works with 0.60[b].004 and overwrite the same location after the 0.60[b].010 upgrade. But that hasn't worked either <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Sad.gif" border=0 align="absmidd

I have just applied the latest patch now SoaSE won't start. No errors, nothing but a brief black screen, I re-edited user.settings to remove the intromovies as well.

I dont know about anyone else but I find this beta feedback in a bit of chaos. If you have the time sure you can read through all the posts but if you want to gauge any sort of majority opinion, good luck. Surely out of this beta IC will want some kind of list of priorities regarding change or atleast discussion for change. I think you need to setup some subforums for organisation, and you need to enable polls from questions set by IC, and stickies on specific topics.

Dont ask me how, but the game is now running Somehow after many hours of installing, reverting, reinstalling drivers & SoaSE several times over the past week it finally worked this morning. Im off to play
