Yea, trade ports and refineries are very important. Trade ports: Build one on one side of your empire, then one on the opposite side. Any planets that are in between should be have a trade port built on them. Try to keep this line away from open fronts though, the last thing you want is other empires having a nice piracy campaign, and you can't reroute your trade ships. Refineries: Find a planet that directly connects as many high resource 'roid to it as possible and build thre

If you find the Jump Drive artifact you don't need to research Long Range Phase jump, but chances are you will of already researched it.

Capital ships are supposed to work with conjunction with fleets of frigates, and to a lesser extent, cruisers, not be amazing one ship wreaking teams. For instance, look at the Advent Carrier. It sports a lot of fighters and bombers for defending the fleet against over bombers and attacking the opposing fleet, but needs frigates and cruisers to take out the anti-strike craft frigates. It also has the energy weapon buff on it.

Yay! One of these threads already! Ok, I find siege frigates can be a bit too powerful, and the AI loves to swarm them way to much. I liked the suggestion that some one made that they have high shields and low hull and when firing they drop there shields.

I like the new AI, it makes sense, other then the fact there is no way to please them without being there personal war slave. Well, they are pretty smart in tactics and stragery, if a scout finds a lightly defended world they will attack it and retreat if a to big of a threat comes. Bah, need to research phase inhibitors. :p

Having two time periods sounds OK I guess. With things like Kuat, how about add a third, unplayable fraction that "owns" everything that represents the civilian population? They could be a civiliany with ships that fly between planets and stuff, and maintain small anti-piracy forces. Players could nationalize said civilian things by paying a certain amount of resources for stations or setting up a garrison for the Empire/envoy for the New Republic or a Cell for the Rebel Alliance with s

Don't underestimate the power of the Dark Side... Or the Sova carrier start. Early on bombers are quite deadly with the lack of any flack frigates and fighters, and even if your opponent got fighters you should be able to take them on. The Sova, while not as good as the Kol, can still do decent ship to ship damage especially with laser research. You just need to know when to retreat and when to kite. :CONGRAT:

People also seem to point out how Homeworld has tracking turrets, and indeed it has. However in Homeworld you control smaller fleets and spend most of your time zoomed quite close in, unlike SoaSE were you would usually be zoomed out and controlling a lot more ships. Even Homeworld 2 can't cope fully with itself. Get enough ships into a battle and the engine coughs and splutters and goes into emergency really low res textures mode.

What I am interested in is if your going to portray the Rebel Alliance as a major military and technological power that controls entire planets or a small group of infultrators that seek to turn the Empire onto itself through inciting the population and opportunic military victories.

Craig, just a thing I have noticed, it seams that bonuses "clump" together on planets. My current game has a Dense Core Larva planet with the electronics component export, better metal miners, and habitable cavern systems two/three jumps from a asteroid planet with both crystal and metal mining and electronics component export. I am sure there are more planets with clumps of bonuses, but having super cash cow terrain planets with two exports and another bonuses that escapes my mind at the

I had a Dreadnought get caught against a light frigate while trying to form up for a phase jump. Luckily there movement wasn't vital time wise (clean up operations of AI's resource asteroid) but when I noticed that I didn't own a new planet I realized my fleet was stuck. Annoying, but I can live with annoying.

Pirate Leader Whispers: I am in your capital's orbit pewing your infrastructure. Yes the mad pirate attacks that wipe out entire plants need to stop, even a well defended planet will suffer badly from a mass Pillager attack before killing them off.

Look at Homeworld, for example. Strike Craft That's just wrong. Not all Frigates kill Strike Craft, and not all Strike Craft kill Capital/Mother ships. If you want to send Ion Cannon Frigates against a squadron of bombers be my guest. Rock, Paper, Scissors simply declares that the winner is whomever guesses and then builds the correct counter.

Good example is a game I play..Navy Field....a single battleship round salvo will break an enemy cruiser or sometimes even a small battleship in two...now thats POWER... And at the same time it makes commanding anything other then a battleship worthless (and if you use a carrier the bitch is endless). Its fine. Maybe more damaging "looks" such as armor shredding off, but nothing more, really.

Bismarck it took ALOT of torpedoes and bombers to take it out. It was an easy target for bombers, since it had very weak AA defences, Acutally, the Bismarck proberly had the most advanced AA systems of any battleship up to that point. However, the Swordfish Bombers traveled slower then the minimum tracking speed of these super advanced artillery. However, I see SoaSE bombers as real world Submarines, near impossible to destroy if your ship

"Sir?" "What? I'm very busy!" *looks at screen* "Eh, you know that planet we colonized recently?" "Yes, yes..." *places orders for the fleet* "Well some some fuzzy animals inhabit it, do you want us to hunt them of, ignore them, or spend lots of credits making sure they are protected?" "Eh? Oh, sure." *more intensive screen watching* "Sir?" "WHAT!" "You have to choose..." "GOD DAMMIT! (Expletive)" *Ship on screen explodes* "Umm... The fuzzy creatures sir?"

Cruisers definitely need to be renamed. Modern day cruisers are actually the most powerful ships that at least the US has in it's arsenal as far as naval firepower goes. I also however agree with schem, "support ship" is a bit wussy. Perhaps "support cruiser." I could just as equally argue that cruisers should be fast, long ranged ships that could preform specific roles as they did in until after WWII. There were AA cruisers, scout cruis

For dead asteroids I had made a suggestion in a older post for a kind of massive space station that worked as a mini-planet, I think it was (simply put), a civilian station with a smaller then normal population and made 1/4th the normal trading ships, a military station that was 8 squadrons and 4 gauss guns, and a research station that served as 2 ordinary ones. Or something similar to that respect.
