Last time I checked, downloading anything requires Internet access. Yes, but at least with that I can downlaod it at work and run it at home. With Impulse I am prevented from doing that simple task.
Ah, perhaps I have missed sth... How are you being prevented to run it at home? You download stuff at work, thus installing it. Then you go home and start the game...? You will need Impulse
[...] GHenrikG, You say it's better to wait for a bigger patch. How about 2 years? Surely there must be a point where you'd rather stop waiting and just get the patch already? The new 2.0 patch for Gal Civ II has just been released. I don't know about you, but I prefer a well tested patch which fixes a lot of issues rather a patch here, which does only minor improvements, and a patch there, which does not rock the day... Let the guys from Stardock and Ironclad do their work and you'll be presented with sth good when it is ready. Won't be long anyway...

We know that Ironclad is going to introduce a campaign at some later timepoint for SoaSE. I wonder, if it would be a good idea to develope some kind of graphical campaign editor along with it. Users could create their own campaigns and publish them similair like it is done with the mods... It would need some easy to use functions, thus newbies like myself would be able to write their own stories. Would be cool to build the maps via galaxy forge and then bundle them together to a long

I think the ideas are great. Especially the idea of critical hits and perhaps even the chance of a shot gone astray and not hitting... leveling up with less benefit at higher levels is cool, too. What about the possibility to hide a fleet in an ionic storm or a gas cloud and only to be detected via scouts? Would be nice if you could park some ships there while the battlefront is moving towards your planets and then suddenly you have some of your ships behind enemy lines...
@GHenrikG - With reference to combat, yeah I can see the rock paper sissors thang, as I said just seems 'light'. Managing those forces; I'm having to micro to stop my Javelis frig's parking next to enemy Kodiaks. A fleet formation would stop this, but not add the je ne sais quoi that I'm after. I just love being out numbered and then beating an enemy through sheer tactical skill! It's good, but I want awesome.<

Perhaps one more thing about strategy: I said that the battle is more or less decided by weight of numbers. To be honest, this is not entirely true. The various ship types have distinct abilities. They have different weaponry, shields, hit points etc. That means, you have to balance your fleet and rely on a specific function. You can build up a fleet with long range weaponry, but if you don't have decent close range ships in your fleet then you might be in trouble, once the enemy clos
[...] It appears victory is only by conquest. GalCiv - moment - can you do it by "influence" with broadcast towers? Can you win diplomatically?
Nope. Influence changes some "battle values" if you are fighting in your territory to your favour. Besides that, it prevents a planet under your "influence" to be settled by the enemy for a period of time. However, this might be adressed

Hi all! Am I dissapointed about the game? Well, yes and no. I loved HOMEWORLD. This was a game which really got me excited. Using different tactics to beat the enemy mattered and the story was awesome! (And I actually thought SoaSE is sth along this line, that's why I got it, next to the good reputation of Stardock) This is the on

You might want to wait a bit longer... Don't get me wrong, it is a great game! However, in my opinion, it starts to get quite repetitive very soon... You have more or less the exact same moves at the beginning of the game. There are not too many surprises, once you get to know the mechanics behind it. I rarely play it right now, because IMO there is simply sth missing (in terms of feeling)... It could have been so much greater than it is at this current stage... If you are jus

Once, ironclad put together the campaign, it would be cool to have a campaign editor (I saw Shadowhal suggesting sth like that in another threat and I think this would be really cool!). Make your own maps, put them together, have some text pop ups for story writing and there you go!

Man, a campaign editor! This would be awesome! Yeah, it would need to have a trigger system which should have two possible effects: first an action effect (ship/fleet A moves/attacks location/ship etc.) and second: a text pop up, where gifted writers could develop the story and create additional atmosphere... This would be the ultimate addition for me... [e digicons][/e]

I would like to see moving planets. I don't know if this is possible at all, but still... I like the idea. Planets rotating around a sun. Phase lines thus might break down if a distance get's too long or the star is in between two planets. You would have to exactly time an attack, otherwise you might have the trouble of your supply route being cut off and your main fleet might strand in hostile territory. It would change the whole tactical situation quite drastically and players would

Hello everyone! I have read this thread with joy! Finally something without too much brainless flaming but with a lot of information to learn from! And thanks a lot to mightygoobi, for your patience and continuing explanations. All the best and keep it going! I have only been in Beijing once and have been very impressed by what I have seen (I don't mean the "WalMart Super Center", which has been one of the first things I remember seeing...). Huh, this city is EXPLODING

I would wish for another way to travel between star systems/ planets within a star system. You simply can set your fleet on course to any known planet. It would be a very slow trip, let's say five minutes until it arrives at its destination. This would add an additional element of surprise. Let's say, I have set half my fleet on a course to a planet behind enemy lines. this fleet would be unavailable for the next five minutes and it can't change its route anymore. While I am hard press

I would love to see gravity and planets playing a larger role in the game. Why not use the planets gravity to accelerate ships, thus have an additional way to travel from planet to planet? It would have to be a very slow movment, in order not to make the phase lanes unimportant. How about a gravity accelerated fleet being very slow out of the planets gravity well, but in exchange nearly not to be detected at all, or only shortly before it arrives at it's destination? (engines are turned
