That's not informative enough. Can we obtain a detailed description of the precise differences between the A.I. personalities ? Is there a webpage where that info has been revealed ?

It seems that this thread's OP title has been changed and toned down. Whoever did that editing made a great judgment call. Agent of Kharma 's OP expressed valid points : it was his choice of thread title that was problematical (even though it was an eye-catcher that did attract me to his post, on an early Sunday morning).

Thanks to both of you ! I now understand where those hundreds of people were located : shame on me for not using my Canadian PhD brain to figure that one out ! (I do not have a lot of online MP experience, obviously). My main problem, then, is this : Suppose I do not want to host a game, but only join a game suitable for MP « n00bs » such as I. How do I proceed to find a game where I won't get matched-up with MP vets ? Yesterday, the few available game

Well, I went to ICO yesterday, for the very first time. There were then over 300 people in the main lobby, but very few games to join (and most were password protected). I wonder what those 309 individuals were doing in the lobby : the chat was very minimal. Don't they go there to create and join games ?! I could have created a game, but I did not have the time. I just went there for the first time to see what the situation was : hundreds of people in the lobby, only 2 or 3 non-passwor
We [at Ironclad] aren't like some other companies where you get ignored
Considering that Blair Fraser took the time and care to give substantial answers (on this thread) deep into the Night, on a weekend, that's a credible statement. Thanks.

Ron Lugge's Reply #15 is very interesting, in what concerns pointing in the direction of a feasible approach -- call it "slot design" or "modular design". As he suggests, it would have to be developed for a major expansion or a sequel. It could make human-vs-human games more dramatic, as creative ship-designers could surprise their adversaries with original component-combos.
From what you guys have described, it sounds like something's happening in the background, so it may be a software firewall popping up blocking things. Try alt-tabbing to see if that's the case.
I agree : there seems to be interference. Personally, before launching SINS (and any other complex game-program), I close, in the Windows XP task-manager, all user-defined background programs (except, of course, the very essential "explorer.exe", which must never be ter
How would you manage your empire and design ships at the same time? This ain't a turn based game. That's actually the reason why we can't design ships. It doesn't seem feasible in real-time.
But it was done before! The Earth 2150/2160 series of command-and-conquer style of fast-paced RTS games (very popular in Germany) made it feasible. Go to Gamespot to read the reviews of Earth 2150 and Earth 2160 (and The Moon Project expansion). For exa

Nobody can reply with any precise technical hypothesis if you limit yourself to such a very general and vague description. I have been playing that game since the June 2007 beta version, and I have never experienced what you describe. My hypothesis is that there is something problematical within your computer, but since you give no technical info whatsoever concerning your machine and in what program environment* it is trying to run the game, it is impossible to answer you.<br
Obviously that makes me think it's something in my system.
I do not want to belittle your problem : just give you some feedback. I run SINS on Windows XP 32-bit, also with a GeForce 6800 (December 2007 drivers : 169.21), but I only have 1GB of RAM. What you describe never happened to me (and I have been playing this game since the June 2007 beta version). My hard disk has never been accessed with any annoying frequency. The game runs very smooth, with

My experience with Stardock download, for the past 18 months (at least), has been extremely positive : always a 750 to 825 kb/sec speed (on my cable connection), and no disconnects (or errors) whatsoever. That is one of the many reasons I have been very happy with Stardock service -- since the GalCiv 1 beta. It is really not fun to wait hours, or to see a 90%-complete download crash : that has never happened to me with SDC. (I'm not paid to say that, I am not friends with anyb

I cannot believe that your decision to buy or not buy is dependent on the ability to name one of your ships "Asskicker II" (to quote you)! As the previous poster has said, the game (for now : because with Stardock, you always can expect new features to be added, eventually) does not have a lot of ship customization. You start with a Capital Homeworld, and then, can colonize other planets and/or asteroids, where you may establish bases. The empire building can be very d

Thanks, kryo : It is my negligence for not making the elementary effort to try that! But I liked to edit the user.setting text-file : it gave me more precise control. @ karelin : I'm glad that it worked. I have Win XP : it is also within a "hidden" folder, there. Your supplementary info will help someone else, who doesn't easily find that folder. But I wonder why Ironclad chose to "hide" its whole "Ironclad Games" folder, where the saved games & replays and the setting

It would be more precisely informative if a Stardock or Ironclad representative (or a veteran forum-user) could detail the exact parameters of all the difficulty levels. The differences between levels must have been quantified, so they could be precisely spelt out in exact quantities (for example : in terms of starting resource malus or bonus -- the comps get minus X resources or plus X resources). Can anybody point us to a forum post or a web page which reveals that informatio

What the last two posters describe does not correspond to my experience of the game : I never have to fight pirates « 100% of the time » (not even 10% of the time). My approach is simple : I press F3 regularly to check what's going on with the bounty situation, and in the last seconds (when the threat bar is filled and it's flashing, like the game manual says), if I am the projected, next victim, I invest credits to divert the pirates's attention to someone else. Against comps, it alway

1. Go read the excellent pinned thread titled « Siege Frigate and Pirate tips for newer players!», started by Annatar11. 2. Go read the « Pirates & Bounty » section in the game's manual. I regularly press F3 and check which player has the most bounty on his head, and I try to outbid the other players at the last minute to avoid being the victim of the next raid. Of course, you need credits to do that. The first, easy step to increase the credit-income rate is to upgrad

In my case, the 1024 x 768 window (on a 1440 x 900 desktop) occurs when you set the windowed mode from the game program's inner options. The solution is to edit the user.setting text-file with Notepad (NOT Wordpad or Word). 1. Find that file in your IrocladGames\SinsofaSolarEmpire\Setting folder. 2. Right-click on the user.setting file, and select open with Notepad. 3. Find this group of lines (the numbers are an example for my original situation) : VideoIsWind
Can you try playing in windowed mode [?...]
Why do you recommend that? I ask, because I always play SINS in a window on my 1440 x 900 desktop, on a 17-inch widescreen, and I was wondering if there were advantages and/or disadvantages of playing in a window -- from a purely technical point of view (not considering the esthetic and the gameplay issues).

I have participated in the Beta process since June, but I have rarely posted on the Forum. I believe that I belong to a "silent majority" of pre-order customers who simply do not have the time to play a lot and to post expert analyses -- on the sophisticated level of the forum regulars who have played a lot of Sins games (no sarcasm intended). I can consequently understand why some IC and SD policy-makers might not be enthusiastic about letting "us" (the members of the sil

i think a complete quit command would be nice, but please dont ahve it be alt f4, i always press it on accident. I don't care if it's alt+F4 or alt+Q or Whatever, as long as there is a fast exit-to-desktop-now key.
