I'm pretty much new myself, but get a capital ship right away, and secure as many resources as possible early on; make sure to do planet upgrades for population to get your econ going. Before too long, get mil labs and research LRMs as they counter the basic frigate unit well. You may want to get two of the other labs if you need to colonize volcanic or ice planets first, and then get the LRMs. And just keep pumping out fighting ships so you've got a big fleet when the time comes.

If anyone knows the answer to my last question, I'm really curious. Thanks.

Hey, I just played my first two games online last night and learned a lesson about sending LRFs against Heavy Cruisers LOL What is the usual counter to this? More heavy cruisers?
I haven't played online yet. I'm guessing there's a way to pause it so you can do your bidness?
How worthwhile is it to explore planets? I almost never find artifacts, so I've given up on it.
How different is the impact of the culture buildings if it's at the planet versus 1, 2, 3, or more systems away?
Does anyone know what sort of ship each of the pirate ships are (for countering purposes, etc.)? Thanks!
