Replay Strategery Discussionating: So, these might not be too interesting for experienced players but I thought I'd slap these two games up to talk about basic strategy for new players to MP. I'm assuming players know the game basics, but may just not be used to the game flow or meta of MP. Game 1 (4v4, 26 min): Pay attention to the starting positions. I and my nearest partner move to 2v1 the enemy player we're surrounding. Taking a player out early

So I thought I'd post a few replays in order to comment on strategy and gameplay for newer players interested in getting into MP. I'll start with two games that are a mix of new and experienced players. I'm hoping this will help give players interested in getting more into MP an idea of what it's about. I'm really not sure where the best place to put them is since we have this General forum that most people visit, then a Strategy forum and Multiplayer forum that less peopl

My experience has been that newer players are actually accepted and allowed in most 5v5 games unless there are more experienced players waiting to get in. Teams are usually chosen with team captains, so as long as things sort of balance out with a new player or 2 on each team, it's fine. Personally, I'd say it's been about 50/50 with newer players listening and team communication being good and it working vs. it being frustrating bad noobitudes - not too bad as long as t
AL: Ancient Retribution? LOL. I dont think it is that good AND it helps you only against TEC. It does nothing against Vasari.
Wat?! Ancient Retribution only works vs. Tec? I know the in-game description mentions Tec being the reason as part of the lore and all but I assumed it wouldn't actually be coded to only do an increase vs. Tec ships.

I think it's also worth mentioning that the Coronata comes with Suppression as a passive ability - and an amazing one at that - so it's going to have more AM to use Unity Mass more often. It's also a Titan that by design is supposed to have a big fleet with it, buffing Unity Mass more. It needs more babysitting out of the gate than other Titans but competes just as well with a few levels on it. AL need buffs in more pressing areas than their Titan...I am surprised about the cooldo

I appreciate the big summary you did but personally I don't feel like repeating myself all over again from other recent threads. All the recent comments in other threads on WotS were also really already a 2nd round of discussing it, the first being from the beta. There should be a patch sometime in the next week or two - I'd rather wait to see what balance changes it brings since devs have probably already decided on major changes by now.
OK How about this...A civilian spacedock structure( think hotels in space)and a civilian cruise ship that transverses them. Destroying them or saving them would reap HUGE diplomatic points... Seeing other life besides warships would make Sins feel more alive........
The thing is, in a competitive multiplayer game, the fun tends to get taken out of it.
I know you are speaking just from your point of view, but personally, for an RTS, especially one without a campaign, the fun starts in MP for me. Playing vs. the AI gets old really quick - too easy and predictable. I want to feel the adrenaline of going up against a human mind that knows how to adapt and outsmart in order to push my own abilit

The power of WotS is that, for what it does, it's really very little investment. It's a single research tech with no pre-reqs and, especially as Advent, you will likely be building a few temples anyway. Splitting up fleets to try and enter phase lanes with them means enemy whole fleets will take them out with ease. By forcing the enemy to split his fleet or be forced to go a different direction, you've already outmanouevered him just by the threat of WotS, not even the use of it.

I wasn't being an asshole, a bit blunt maybe. The guy said Sins feels dead and needs XYZ. I told him Sins doesn't have, won't have, and imo shouldn't have XYZ because it's working as intended already - here are some games that have what you're looking for - not gtfo out Sins or anything. It's like, if you're playing ping pong and a guy says, you know, this game is a bit flat - it needs like, larger paddles, and a bigger ball, and a larger court, and is played o

I was the one doing it, not on the receiving end. Avoiding whole phase lanes because they have a ToC on it somewhere? Investing in Novaliths or Kosturas (I'll ignore that culture wait suggestion as that's a silly amount of time and easily countered by...what already exists for the enemy) to counter a ToC? All really really disproportionate responses to something as simple as laying down a temple. You realize most games do not give you time or room to just "avoid certain phase lanes" o
And this IS a 4x game, idiot.
Wow now you've hurt my feelings with that harsh language dude. Most 4x games are turn based - so I was referring to those. They incorporate tons of things like random events, unique discoverable bonuses, etc. that some of the people in this thread are asking for. Yes, Sins has some minor elements of these 4X games, but basically, at its core, its an RTS with a little 4x tacked on. None of thes

Well, you can make the argument that X isn't useful or necessary if you are already winning for anything. The point is, if you are losing, it can put you back in the game easily. It is obviously a defensive measure for the most part - although it can be used offensively as well once you've carved into enemy territory. It also can't be scouted the way Red Button can. It does have a downside (costs resources to get the planet pop back) and once the enemy knows you have it in certain

Go play 4X games. This is an RTS. 4X games have exactly what you are looking for. I recommend Endless Space and Shogun II.

Speaking of balance patch, I actually feel like corvettes are pretty well balanced right now so I'm a little worried if they are still getting changes like their own damage type next patch that might mess things up again. I think this game could be in a pretty good place balance wise if they nerf VR SB, buff AL (culture wise or something else), and nerf Wail of the Sacrificed (this is the most challenging one to fix without overnerfing it I think).
All I can suggest is playing by your own rules: I'm going to keep my n00b teammate alive for X minutes even though he's not building anything, I'm going to harass the heck out of someone while they're busy steamrolling, I'm going to micro like a boss while fighting 1vX so the next time I go 1v1 it'll be no contest.
Yeah I like this perspective - part of the strategy is making hard choices of which to comm

Indeed - I stupidly hopped into a 3v3 last night and didn't notice one on the other team was VR. Game was 3+ hours. It didn't help that my teammates were asshats bickering with each other all game and refusing to help each other but the VR was in eco spot and just spammed them non stop. I did have some delicious Wail of the Sacrificed fleet decimation to retaliate but I couldn't carry a situation like that to victory. Each VR SB had like 24000 health plus 14000 shields. I had a le

(ex. building placement since "auto-place" is a thing, ship micro, etc)
Never use auto place - best to place your labs apart from each other so they have to be attacked one at a time and can't both be hit by wide spread fire. You'll also want to place your starbases, repair bays, turrets, hangers, etc. strategically. For ship micro I usually hot key my capital

There are many non-ideal teammates: The ones who are semi-autistic who turtle up from the very start with tons of defenses on their home planet and refuse to communicate. The ones who drop from the start and say "Haha! Have fun without me!" (actually this could be a blessing, as the AI is likely better in some of these cases) The ones who bitch and complain about teammates, cause team morale to drop, rage, and then go all passive aggressive and suicide their stuff.

BlueJay - if that was you I was playing a 3v3 with last night, I have the replay saved if you wanted it. I warn you though - it's 4 hours long lol. The opponents were asshats who refused to quit, turtled up, spammed a bazilion mines, lagged like crazy, tried to insult us throughout, etc. But we finally won. I thought it was weird you left when you did but a MD makes sense. http://www.2shared.com/file/1SttBrLw/

People have been requesting replays so here is another one. I didn’t have many to choose from and the teams are not that balanced but there are some interesting things. I think one of our players (Yolan) was afk or something (or just quiet) and then dropped or mini-dumped after about 30 minutes so that evened things out a bit. The game is basically two simultaneous 2v1s with the other two players seemingly navel-gazing. JameX has trouble vs. the best player on the other team early

I used to play Company of Heros and that game does use a kill count for how many and what type of units were destroyed. You usually command about 5 infantry squads and maybe 5 vehicles at once at the most. The small number makes each important and you should be attached to them. They also level up. Then there's Sins...hundreds of units all firing at once in massive space battles - how would kills be awarded when all the damage is being shared amongst that many ships? You could do it by %
