I think it goes back to StarCraft where you mined crystals and gas. The crystals looked pretty on a map, as opposed, say, to piles of elephant poop. The gas geysers blew out attractive green gusts to be visually pleasing also. Scouts and light frigates cost no crystal probably because low end SC units required no gas, thus giving you a bit of time to get gas mining going and take care of more important matters such as rushing. Grassmaster, I think they fixed the slider problems in patch 1.1 which is supposed to be in the download versions by now. I can't find the patch notes again. There is a huge amount of changes in the patch notes for 1.1 if you can find them. Edit: (Oops. They did not fix the slider problems in 1.1. Many other problems are emerging as players now begin to comment on the full released game. I think this game will need several patch levels, perhaps some expansions and user mods too.)

Smugglers 4. There's a demo. This game reminds me vaguely somehow of ... Puzzle Quest Galactrix ... except that all the puzzle stuff is not there, conventional combat resolution. First impression of the demo is that the ship outfitting and adventure depth is much greater. Oh, no, it's not Puzzle Quest Galactrix. But my first impression was: I can't zoom out (I swear, after playing Demigod I think it's impossible to enjoy RTS games without a God-Eye-Zoom)! Agree with you. But SC2 is not going to have zoom either, last I heard.
Well, there are some people who would rather mod because they just would. That being said, I have the impression that getting there was all the fun for the modder, mostly. How many of the mods have been maintained? How many have been kept up to date with the latest game version? How many will work with patch version 1.05? All of this is very mysterious to the average player like me.

Tages in Dawn of Discovery Demo ? Seems to be. In the top directory of the demo there is a file called TagesClient.exe. Perhaps Tages is so integrated that even the demo has to have it along, or maybe Tages is what sets the playtime limit with the demo. Not hurting anything, since it is just a demo, but maybe there should have been a DRM warning with the demo too.

Check also sound drivers. Do you get sound stuttering and dropouts as the game proceeds? Latest version of DirectX 9.0c. Well, you make a good product and it gets praise from one and all. Ironclad has made a very good product, so it gets the praise it deserves. Reviews in general ... well it is wise to pay attention to mention of bugs, technical issues, gameplay flaws and omissions. But I would not cease to play a game simply because professional reviewers don't give it a high score.
