I have a pretty good strategy going on right now. I'm actually playing races as INTELLIGENT on a TINY map and ended up with a starting location that had Sol and 2 other yellow stars in the same sector ;p BTW: rare planets, tight clusters as well... I find that heavy trade, starbases, and purchasing tech from other races were key. My problem now, the Altarians have been more than matching my military strength. Though they did not attack me...they took out every mino

I agree about planetary bombardment. There needs to be a happy medium between TERROR STAR and SOLDIERING. I mean, come on...the days of the Vietnam War are over...no need to send in troops that stand little chance of success...but then again we don't wanna blow up the whole planet right? If not a ship...then even a missile that can attack a planet and destroy population would be nice. SOMETHING...ANYTHING! I'm finding soldiering advantage to be a much bigger benefit
Ditto, First off, all I ever see are those red shark thingies... Secondly, they came out in the first game I ever played with Excaliburs...too easy to kill. Lastly, in a recent game they came out in the very beginning and cleared the map of most ships...they were way overpowered. The AI never helps kill 'em, so I had to slide research up to 100% and rush build some anti-matter hot dogs to feed to the sharks. I know space monsters shouldn't be easy...but being that
I no longer like terror stars because I need to build dozens of them, each one of them next to the systems of the major races, and strike all at once with each. If you make just one, everybody else goes to war with you. If you build several, but not enough for an instant win...all trade routes disappear and my economy goes to hell. Whether you destroy the system or end of at war with everybody else, either way I lose my trade routes, which makes the rest of the game very diffi
I'm all for fairness and equal playing turf. I'm pro-ladder!
Keep this thread going...I really wanna join an empire and I can't decide which one! Are these the only two empires out there? There's gotta be somebody out there with a name better than G.R.O.S.S.............. Maybe I'll start my own empire and name it F.U.G.L.Y. :notsure:
I never understood why a colony ship could not be reused...does it become part of the new colony or something?
Umm...maybe you have advanced cloaking??? J/K :p No clue, but if the comp can't see it either...RUN WITH IT!
The highest I've ever had was 52 also...but that was with starting out with the PQ bonus (8%???). I can't EVER seem to get it higher than that. My starting planets are at about 22PQ. Maybe that's the problem...I should restart to get a higher PQ...I hate doing that. What else can improve PQ other than these things? 1. Starting bonus 2. Soil Treatment 3. Habitat Improvement 4. SPECIAL Events 5. Terraforming 6. The Terraformer
If there's any civ that you're currently destabilizing, or plan to...that's where you would want to dump huge masses of ships. Ruin their economy with increased maintenance. Just make sure that whatever ships you're building are better than what you're giving away...that idea could always backfire.
Where do I go if I'm from Jersey??? :notsure: Any Jersey Empires out there?
Now that I have a grasp of the game...I read in the manual about joining Empires to contribute scores to the Metaverse. I don't even know where to begin...........
Actually I'm a big fan of stellar cartography lately since I've been playing on gigantic maps. I know exactly how many colony ships I need and where to send them. So I'm guessing that purple stars do not show up on the stellar cart. map as yellow??? Is there any way to increase your chance of having a purple on a map...like taking LUCK maybe??? Then again, it's luck for that damn AI too...........
On a related note...did ya ever notice when you start a brand new game that the tech might say 16 months...but as you play it gets done in 3? This happens alot to me during play, where I'll change th slider to allow more research and shave a few months off, and it's still gets done ALOT sooner than expected. Moral of the story is that I think it DOES update itself when you hit TURN, not necessarily when you close the research window and open it up again.
I'd say uninstall everything that you did so far...the demo, the game that you fiddled with, any other junk programs that you don't use anymore, and reinstall again. Don't run any other programs...defrag, restart, and play. If that don't work...call one of Dell's interns for a new PC!
I just switched gears...now I like Captain Bizarre's idea better! ;) I think max PQ for the new mods should bring uninhabitable planets to PQ 15 (not 14 as you suggested) IMHO Then the rest is colonize like normal... That would definitely kep me interested later in the end game...as well as change alot of my colonizing strategies DURING the game. Good call Cap!
Did ya ever wonder why each individual planet doesn't have it's own distribution sliders? In other words, when it comes to social, research, and military percentage...don't you think the planets would take on a certain INDIVIDUALITY if each were specialized? I know for a fact that, in star clusters, the planets with the better PQ would be geared towards social & research, while planets closer to enemy territory would have the slider more towards military. Does that mak
Leasing KILLED me in my early games. Yeah, you start off quick...but the AI has a big economical curve over you for the next few years. That's why I could never get any trade goods...my total spending was lower to pay the leases. I don't lease anymore at all unless it's a MILITARY EMERGENCY. In the beginning, my BC is in the yellow each month, but only by about 50. I adjust it each turn to give me plenty of production without going into the red. Military is at 80%,
I remember a Pirrip as well. Phillip Pirrip from "Great Expectations" ?
What about that planet Dalas? I can't figure that one out. It's "salad" backwards...
I would say just buy it off of ebay, express mail certifed funds in US dollars to the seller, and have the seller ship it to your aunt.
I guess it all depends on the back story regarding resources. If they're an old Precursor artifact, what then makes them pop out of nowhere? Maybe they slipped in through a wormhole? If that's the case, and it's within sensor range, then yes I agree with you. Maybe a pop-up is in order to let you know. If you play to be a resource mogul...you may want to have a constructor camped in each sector, or near a starbase in wait. Then again, you could just attack whoever g
Now that I know so much more about the game...I wish I had that Draginol effect like I did in my very first game. They wiped out everything that flew in my tiny galaxy. I almost want to have it happen again, play out the century needed to research Excalibur tech, and kick their ass! So long as they don't invade me first.............
#1 by Citizen -=YIN=- - 5/12/2003 9:45:05 AM "Try all AIs on Genius (tiny or small maps is best for a challenge...don't use Huge or Gigantic maps since that makes the game too easy, IMO)." Hmm...are the small maps really tougher??? I played the small maps when I was a beginner because I thought it was easier, there's alot less focus on range and expansion. I just get the stellar map, send out a few colony ships, and WHAM... In a bigger map, I could spend hours just expanding w
What is the purple star??? I've seen an alien colonize one in my very first game and it had 3 20+ planets in the system. Is this like a SUPER STAR or something? Better than yellow? Is there one on every map? (I doubt it...) Is this a rare and random thing? I heard it mentioned in a thread somewhere. Do they show up on stellar maps?
