I play only gigantic maps now...and I use 1 survey ship in the beginning. Later in the game when my military is ok for now, no colony ships are needed, and only constructors are being built...I DEFINITELY add another survey ship. By then, I may have already found a Precursor Ranger or researched Phoenix Tech...but the bottom line is that the bonuses that AUTO-SURVEY can provide to your fleet and also to you economy and soldiers are wonderful. More than 1 ship makes all the dif

Valamir I did the same thing! I found 42 Precursor Corvettes while I was in the process of finishing my Overlord research. I loaded em and sent them to the Altarians...the biggest thorn in my side. They had about 2 Dreadnoughts to their name and a multitude of other scattered ships. They stopped building ships completely for another 25 turns or so while I finished my Overlord. It was a chance I was willing to take before I declared war. My Excalibur dominated that
No game improvement posts this time... Post your favorite map scenario and why. Here's mine: Map size: gigantic Stars: tight clusters Planets: rare Alien races: random Government: Universalists with some extra luck, creativity, trade routes & economy I love this game style best because it seems to propose the biggest challenge for me so far. I like not knowing what the aliens are like. I like the big map for obvious reasons (longer game play). I li
It's funny because, IN THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME, my research path is always the same...pump out the colony ships, but also research to get the bank, manufacturing center, habitat improvement, better propulsion, and trade goods first. No matter what the scenario, I always get the stellar map and jump onto those yellow stars as fast as I can no matter how long it takes until the map has none left. To achieve this, I need more range. During my expansion, my planets grow slow and
Now that I know what the "ironman" feature is...I like the idea. Tourneys should have a different feel than my long term game anyway. The lack of save/load will definitely get me up outta bed on a Saturday morning and make me work for that high score.
When sensor drone and scouts complete a sensor sweep (all area is uncovered) they should automatically move to an adjacent sector and continue a new sweep. Alz
I finally took the time to read this huge thread. I can tell that if just a fraction of these ideas come into play that GalCiv is just gonna get better with age. So as not to repeat any part of this thread...here's an idea that I did not see mentioned: ARTIFACTS Artifacts are "special items" (use your imagination). These are one shot items that can only benefit another race other than the owner if it is sold, traded, or won as a result of war. (NOT a trade good) I guess es
Ditto...what's an ironman feature? I forgot about those possible future cheats... I think the best way to have tourneys is to upload a galaxy from this website to keep it fair and even. Then what...do you play until you win or get a deadline for your score to be recorded? Some people have more time to play than others.
I think the idea is really cool. Here's a thought that would simplify it and give a bigger role to smaller ships...how about an AUTO BLOCKADE tab in the ship options? Auto blockade would keep your ship stationary around the enemy system and would not destroy any trade ships, just send them away so to speak. Auto blockade DOES NOT declare war on that race, only takes away income from trade, as well as bonuses from starbases like you mentioned. It shouldn't have an
Anybody ever see the AI build a TS?
This is a great idea!!! I don't think I trust people enough to play the proper settings...but can you really download a game setting and begin that way? There's no need to limit starbases or saves IMHO...if we all play with starbases and saves/reloads, it'll all balance out anyway. As long as everyone started out the same (in the same galaxy, same placement, same planets, etc). If we just base this on settings...the guy that starts out near a mess of yellow stars in
Valamir...it could take place as a "habitat mod". You wouldn't need to have a population on EVERY starbase...but it's always nice to have a starbase in that distance corner of the galaxy where the aliens can't find you...kinda like a trump card in the event of war. Humans are like roaches...you kill us off...we keep coming back! This starbase could build a colony ship to get the species up and running again. Ever play Starcraft? It's nice to have a zergling drone buried in t
So how do trade goods help us exactly if we could make them ourselves anyway??? The people that developed the trade goods should get the bigger cut of profit (more value to the trade routes)
I wanna buy a beer for the guys that put this game together. It has me addicted for the first time since Ultima Online...but without the $10.00 per month. :CONGRAT: I love the expandability, the thought into future upgrades, etc. Even the 1.03 patch had me very excited! I can't wait for future expansions...HURRY UP! My thought for this post is this: the game has many options that allow you to end a game and start a fresh new one different than the last. HOWEVER what abou
I always thought of a starbase as a self-sufficient entity. I don't think people on the surface should have to pay to keep it going. There's many other ways (mods) that could keep the starbase afloat without needing the assistance of a planet. That far into the future, charity shouldn't be needed for a starbase. There's so many other ways to generate income. So many mods that could be made to counter any maintenance per month, so many uses for a starbase that could EARN bc rather th
OOOH...thanks bonscott! :D
Yeah...population would definitely have to be realistic...no BILLIONS...just a million or so. The mod sounds cool, and maybe it could be limited to those "citizens" being taxed and generating income from the starbase. I guess it would be another economy mod?
Maybe there's still drugs in me from Woodstock '99...but I haven't seen any plus signs. I guess I have to zoom in AND hit show ships. I'm pretty sure that it showed up as a regular ship...but I'll double check tonight. It's very frustrating trying to upgrade 27 starbases. It would be cool if I could just right click the starbase in the fleet list (to send a constructor there) as opposed to having to constantly locate it on the map.
Yeah you're right. I did it backwards last time. If you're gonna go evil...have a good military and secured trade routes FIRST. If you're weak in the guns and weak in the trade...they have no reason to respect you. You'll never get the freighters out if your enemies are blowing 'em up. My evil empire was #1 in research and social projects. Big mistake. It all started when killing those worms meant +29% to the PQ of a brand new planet. Alz
You guys get colored + signs for starbases? They are INVISIBLE on my map until I light up the whole fleet. It shows up like any other ship. I got nuttin!!! Where's my plus sign??? UH OH...I better look into that...I may have a bug :notsure:
I disagree...RESOURCES show up as crosses. After you build there, they disappear. You can only see starbases on the little map with all of the rest of your fleet...which is very tough when you have alot going on. Alz
All I gotta say is that, although it kills me, the path of good is good, the path of bad is bad. What I mean is that as an evil civilization, the aliens were declaring war on me for no reasons at all. Relationships were bad...alliances didn't last more than a month. Worse yet, when you're at war with one...all their friends hate you too!!!!!!!!!!! >:( As a goodie goodie civ, people give me money as tribute. So now whenever I play and I have the opportunity to kill some wor
Does auto retreat come into play immediately or when a ship is low on hit points? If hit points is the answer...how low do they need to get before turning back home? Alz
Wow...I actually really like this idea... What if star bases were treated like planets? With a growing population, research and production value, taxes, etc. No where near as much as a good planet...but still interesting to develop! Some social projects would be able to be incorporated into a star base, most would not. The panel for a star base would be identical to that of a planet, but with limited options as to what could be built. Star bases could even have THEIR OWN li
Lemme just say (before I rant) that I built my first Excaliburs last night after survey ships swallowed up almost every ship bonus on the gigantic map. Yeah...that'll be the last terrar star I ever build ;) Anyway...usually I've been going for tech or culture wins, but in this last game I decided from the beginning to go military. I have to admit that large scale war does get very confusing. Maybe it's me...but keeping track of my fleet in battle is quite hard. Here's what
