I have a 4/3/2 a 3/3/3 and most strangely a 2/3/4. can I use the latter as a starting city or will it be pop capped? I don't really understand the population rules. but the idea of a city that can take 5 enchantments ( I have enchanters!) makes me think its worth a try. I assume I should make it a fortress, even though conclave makes for better per essence boni? Is there a city optimization guide, I'm having trouble getting beyond

I just did a clean system install and the game still won't run, via steam or otherwise.... Windows 7 ultimate sp1 Help? same error Failed to start game (unknown error) is there a particular set of drivers that is recommended? I have nVidia
I agree that the manual is lovely, but I am also finding it unusable. There are too many pictures covering text. This is very strange. Is it just me? Is there a text only version somewhere for actual use rather than framing? Thanks.
I second the idea that the AI fleeting behavior in recovery should be top priority. have them run their fighters away and wait till they have 5 maxed fleets of them before they come back at the very least. Does the AI sim battles to know when to avoid? Once you've gotten a battleship to sit on one of their planets, they really don't seem to be able to take anything back. They don't really do anything tactically irritating like first striking starbases just after a war declare
1. make the UP interesting. have early data available on topic and likely voting outcome for each race, make those have diplomatic values so you can either sell your vote or buy other votes. 2. make espionage meaningful by giving it other than pre-invasion sabotage functionality. also give it diplomatic repercussions. 3. make it easier to turn off autoupgrades, so we can get industrial tech for the starbase improvements, without being blighted, by non-cost effective "upgrades"<
Replying to myself, as my post isn't appearing... does it take a long time? Rabe
Hiya. I'm playing on a large galaxy and have hideous numbers of planets. I made the mistake of researching industrial sector(for the starbase upgrades, really I should probably have stopped after advanced factories) and now everything is autoupgrading, which is bad for me since I am fighting a war and need big scary ships tout suite. Damn Thalans. I manually canceled the upgrades, which took forever... and the next turn.... THEY WERE BACK!!! (screaming) Now some would argue
Heya. Finished a galciv game... redular current version dread lords.... nothing impressive took out random (turns out to have been 3 + the scotties) tough opponents in a medium gaxacy ~8600 score. Happened to win an influence victory, though I was militarily dominant as well having put down the drath -- who misinterpeted my pacifism for weakness... In any case, the exciting bit was when I tried to upload the score to the metaverse. It didn't like my login
I've noticed I'm not getting any good/neutral/evil choices when colonizing..... despite having a normal install and a whole suite of "Duglis" made custom events in my data folder... I started a huge game and colonized about 30 systems to verify that the event generator simply isn't getting used... not one decision... Event files go directly in the data files and .pcx files in the gfx folder, correct? So where's the problem? All other aspects of the game appear to work (although I have t
Just to clarify: One *can* change the dregin.net path, but not the path associated with the GalCiv (dropdown) itself... whether this is a bug or merely counterintuitive is, perhaps, a question of taste... I assume the former is effective in solving the problem, but have not explicitly verified it yet. I'm going to BED. Rabe LOL ~SDC~
ah HA!!! I went into my SDC tools/reg page and there is a section at the bottom that asks for the install paths of updates... in my case at least it says /stardock/dregin.net (even though all I have is GC and Smart Exception) The only problem is there doesn't appear to be any way to change the given path as the browse button isn't working for me, nor is manually editing... Thoughts? ~SDC~
Am I correct in my surmise that those who purchase directly from stardock get their game installed in the stardock directory, and it is only we pukes who bought the game on CD that have a default install folder involving Strategy first? I ask this because the SDC updater seems to put all the updated files in the Stardock folder.(Inside Dregin.net, even for those of us who have not yet subscribed to the omnibus package.) Now if I run the nominally updated app from the software m
This is my last post in this thread, because I *clearly* haven't a clue what is going on... Using "Run App" from the sdc/dregin menu works fine... the app in the galciv folder CTD's immediately... does SDC get its support files over the network when run from the software page, rather than the local disk...just odd, good luck with it.... Rabe ~SDC~
More data. DLed the entire package from the server via SDC... (i.e. noo CD install of 1.0) works fine... the updater must not be using the full file list... ~SDC~
using sdc to update from 1.0(off the cd)--->1.04.62 does cause the modabilities.mtd file among others to disappear... restoring the file moves the CTD from immediate to the end of galaxy creation.... Odd this hadn't been noticed before... clearly not all installs were affected or the thread would be somewhat more crowded... I'm tempted to try the standalone... work for anyone else? Rabe ~SDC~
I am having this problem too... I suspect a subtly bugged updater... sent .cra and .err to CariElf... curiously reinstalling SDC and GalCiv has been ineffective... Anyone having file association switch problems? Is there a blanket "restore defaults" command somewhere in Windows (98)? Thanks for all insights, Rabe ~SDC~
Thx to CariElf for helping me resolve the problem... it appears my modabil.mtd had evaporated during the upgrade.... all is well now :) ~SDC~
Hi. The extremely lame comp (433mhz celeron, 128MB RAM, 4mb video ati rage IIC running win98) at my parent's house was running 1.03---> 1.04.59 competently enough,(with no mods to graphics files) and now it tends to pop me out to a crashed machine (i.e. no CNRTL_ALT_DEL) with a still mobile mouse pointer as soon at it trys to load the intro screen... soI removed a few .biks, (like the initial screen and the (option doors) peeling back) but it just crashes anyway... Was anything tweaked
So having +Speed SB's in the trade route sectors actually **reduces** your income, both in terms of baseline (aggregate route length) and trade bonus intersection time? That's arguably a bug. :notsure: ~SDC~
I'd *love* it if we weren't tied to the arrows and ****could change the final digit when offering bc/influence during trades***..... (is this a windows 98 issue, does no one else have this problem?) Rabe P.S. also (this is a biggie) an option to unlink the econ sliders, since their logical connection is apparently unnecessary and therefore bizarre. :notsure:
I'd like it so you couldn't tell from the race descriptions what alignment your "random" set AI's had chosen... "No Concrete info available" would be fine, make it an option if needed... (do people pick random and then filter?) Thanks, Rabe ~SDC~
First let me say this game is AbFab. It is simply the most compelling enjoyable TBS ever. Makes being unemployed almost fun. Please license and do a remake of Master of Magic and I'll die happy. ;P Bless you for the locks on the econ bars, that was driving me insane. And I had a problem getting SDC to work (because of the apostrophe in my name, oddly) and you folks were very helpful. Thank you. Questions: I've only played for a week, but I keep seeing the same
