Alright, well, chiming in on the SB/PJI issue... I don't like the idea of the SB upgrade completely outclassing the PJI ability. The damn things have really limited use as it is. *That said*, I don't think upgrading PJIs to be uber-blockers is a good idea either (for the same reasons it wasn't before). Personally, I think the answer is that the SB should grant PJIs in the well the "uber-block" ability. Whether this is granted via
Phase gates are awesome even with RA up and Running. However, if you realize you are in serious trouble, all you need to do is pay and activate RA, and BOOM, you have instant ships. Its like having frigate factories that don't take up logistics slots.
Phase gates *are* awesome, but I no longer have a reason to tech to RA. Phase gates are good enough that they completely negate the benefit you're pointing
...let the vendor know that Stardock does not allow the re-selling of used copies of their software and then buy a new un-used copy.
Edit: Re-reading Monk's post, he wasn't really saying that SD doesn't allow used copies period. Oops. Ah well, I'll leave the info below anyway. :p Eh... well, technically that's not right, by my understanding. The software can be re-sold just fine. It's the transfer of serial numbers (not required to play the software as-provid
Thanks:)
Pity, I found the IRC more amusing and more useful (though never at the same time) than the forums during the beta. Oh wells.
Never really left, pretty much check up on these forums daily, but yeah, I don't exactly post much/hop on IRC these days. Thesis and job hunting (finally at an end, woo!) really ensure that. Thanks, though :D
I'm going to have to request screenshots of the new purtyness. My only Sins-capable machine went out for repairs today :(
...it's a little strange that they would sell Freespace, considering the game is open source now and you can basically download it legally and for free.
Well... sure, the engine is open, but the content isn't. Yeah, yeah, I know about the EULA, but that was changed (that is, even on the original CD, that EULA wasn't copied to the machine -- the one without the "friends" clause was), unfortunately. *Technically*, those FSOInstallers and whatnot aren't on the up and up.
Personally, I have no problem with mini-expansions (and would, in all likeliness, grab them), but there's no way I'd touch a subscription service for GalCiv2 or Sins -- it doesn't work with the way I play these games. With strategy games in general, I tend to play in 'spurts' -- I'll be all over the games for a couple weeks, then not touch 'em for a couple months. I have no interest in paying for a game while I'm not going to be using it.
Heya -- just came to my attention that the CrossOver guys have setup a separate "games" group, and among their mentioned games... http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/group/?app_id=4030 Sins! :) It's not officially supported, but it's been tested to at least run, so it might be worth installing the demo to give it a shot. Not going to do it myself (like I really need Sins i

While I mildly disagree with #2, I'll mostly agree with the others and add: The AI doesn't seem to bother with exploiting neutral wells! Those wells can be really useful (not to mention fun to fight over) but the AI seems to pretty much ignore them.
So... if you don't allow a normal quit, how do you plan to handle the "let's save and get back to it later" situations? Everyone gets a loss everytime they drop out to continue later? :/
Gonna give him the benefit of the doubt here. He's been registered since 2003, so I'm gonna lean towards legit request. ;) Anyhow, yeah -- contact SD, they'll probably set you up.
Eh, we tested this yesterday. Mitigation applies regardless of wether or not it has shields (so, there is hull "mitigation"), but phase missiles that pass shields aren't mitigated. It essentially works out that a phase% is better than an equivalent +dmg% once shield mitigation is past 50%. Before 50%, +dmg% is the better bet. Focus fire with the Vasari, phase-missile lovers. ;)
Posted a replay with a relatively early Returning Armada vs 2 teamed hard AIs if anyone is curious. :) [link="https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=9&libid=72"]2 AI vs 1 Zed Returning Armada Rush example[/link]
For godsakes there are people screaming their lungs out on this forum about "Fix x" or "Fix y" and you guys are fixated on voice acting.
IC has already mentioned they're planning on bringing the voice talent back in for battle chatter, so hey.
If you want to get a feel for how different the Vasari can really play, try a "tech rush" to Returning Armada. I've successfully pulled it off vs 2 hard AIs, and it really demonstrates how different the Vasari can play. Just tech up to Returning Armada as fast as possible, put Phase Gates on all your planets, and watch the ships pile up. You end up not needing any defense because of your ability to always have a fleet be no more than 1 jump from any hotspot. Edit: just realized you s
To quote Blair:
Battle chatter won't make it in for the initial release though we do still intend to include it in a future patch or content release. It was scheduled to be recorded along with all the other voice work but it didn't fit in the time allocated and the unit voice work was higher priority.
With any luck, it'll be coming. :)
Agreed, I would like the blockage/surrender option
Well, blockades and culture kinda go hand-in-hand. Your capital ships repel enemy culture, so... start the culture machine, and station caps in enemy orbit 'til they go neutral. :)
I didn't, no... as that doesn't make much sense to me :p
Yeah, I dig the way it plays. Currently, when playing vs Advent, I do a lot of non-focused fire until a unit's shields fall, and then there's a big rush to put that one down. Rinse-repeat.
Well, apologies for not making myself clear -- I should've made it more clear that I was looking to compare fighter vs bombers for anti-siege purposes, not as a magic bullet. Perhaps I jumped on you a bit too quickly, but really, I'm just tired of hearing much of the siege frig complaints and it looked as though you were heading in that direction (*not* what I wanted this to be about).
*sigh* Please don't try to turn this into yet another "defenses suck and siege frigs are IMBA" thread. You have plenty other topics for that, and frankly, I'm not interested in hearing it. The intent of this was to check if fighters made a better planet defense force when it came to Siege Frigs. It appears they do, if you don't mind sacrificing effectiveness vs the broader range of targets bombers ruin.
If you mouseover fighters in the Squadron Management panel, it tells you they are good against LRM and Siege frigates.
Pfft, originally posted before 1.02 ;) In any case, the forum is eating my html, [link="http://danielv.chaosnet.org/sinsarmor.html"]so here's a link to a quickly whipped up table of the armor types.[/link]
