Eh, strikecraft really are extremely imbalanced when used en masse.
I'm not sure about that. They are certainly POWERFUL when used en masse. But imbalanced? Not sure. Name something that isn't powerful when used en masse. LRFs? Yup - powerful en masse. Heavy cruisers? Yup - powerful en masse. Everything is powerful when used en masse, especially when focus-fired en masse.
Why bother with a heavy flak cruiser? Fix the flak frigate we have now!
I agree. If we get a heavy flak cruiser, what's the flak frigate for? A paperweight? He gets points for good creative ideas for cruisers and their special abilities though :-) I was actually wary of saying anything about the flak frig. You see, the tendency when "fixing" something in games is to "overfix" it, and break something else. In other words, buffing th
There are a few of them out there - I've seen them. But I don't know why they aren't more prevalent.
Personally, I vote NO on this change. For the sake of a good discussion, why?
For one thing, it seems to be a change you want because the AI is too dumb to not charge into mines. But we shouldn't cater the entire game, unit balance, etc. around the AI. We should cater it around human opponents. Second off, I don't think we should protect people from the risk of warping into a system and landing on a
To solve both of these, I once again propose that the scouts' mine detection ability also disables abilities on the detected mines. That way, once the mines are spotted they can't be triggered until the scouts leave range or get destroyed.
Personally, I vote NO on this change.
Researchable abilities for flak frigs: Flak burst for TEC, telekinetic push for Advent, jam weapons (or phasic trap?) for Vasari. Again, make these units slow, and keep their ranges limited so they don't compete with fighers.
Do flak frigs suck? Are they essentially broken? I've tried to use them many times. They just don't seem to counter strikecraft for some reason, even if built in huge numbers. In addition to just plain not doing much against strikecraft, there are other problems. For instance, the buggers seem to take FOREVER to turn out the numbers required, even using multiple frig factories from multiple systems (that's not a scientific observation, it just "seems" that way).<
Nothing short of fifty plus anti-fighter frigatesSee, what no one seems to realize is... 50+ anti-fighter frigates are pretty damn cheap. Both in terms of fleet supply and resource cost. They're FAR cheaper than the amount of resources needed for carriers.
This is true, and I've tried it, even in several recent games. It seems like a good idea. Unfortunately, it just doesn't seem to work. For one thing,
Make sure that you have a phase stabilizer on BOTH ENDS. In other words, you can't jump unless you have a phase stabilizer where you are jumping FROM, and a phase stabilizer where you are jumping TO.
I'm guessing that the diplomacy expansion to the game will have a good mechanism to deal with this.
There's a manual that comes with the game. Even if you download the game you get a manual - look for it.
U have to spam TONS of mines to make it likely enemy ships will hit a few. You'll spend more on the mines than the enemy will spend on lost ships. Mines aren't broken, they should be allowed to be placed at the edge of the grav well.
Personally, I like an epic strategy game that isn't decided in 30 minutes. Even for multiplayer.

Thanks Blair. I wanted to know because I found the unfair AI fairly tough going against it, and I needed to know how tough to be on myself in my performace evaluation. If you said it doesn't cheat at all, I'd be really tough on myself. If you said it cheats some, I'd be less tough. Thanks. And again, I have no problem with a cheating AI. Even less so here, because there is "truth in advertising" - the AI is labeled unfair!
I want to know whether the unfair AI "cheats." In other words, does it get a resource or monetary bonus? Stronger ships? Etc. Note that I don't mind if this is the case, I just want to know whether it is true or not.
I'm not sure I understand any of your points. If you want a shorter game instead of a longer game, play a smaller map. Try a dumber AI. Etc. If you don't want the enemy fleet to run when it is outnumbered, overpowered, countered by your fleet, etc. then what do you want it to do, fight anyway? If so, you are arguing for a dumber AI. Then the devs are "damned if they do, damned if they don't" because there are tons of other people who have argued for a s
I've actually found mines to be not that useful. They are so expensive, and so easy to miss, that they don't seem to be worth building too much, and when I do build them I lose money on them, i.e. the amount I spend on mines is greater than the amount of money lost in ships for my opponent.
Wow. I would recommend sending a saved game, dxdiag information, and info from this post to .
Thanks. I suppose we need to know definitively from someone whether or not the stolen income stream should show up in a credits mouse-over. Hopefully someone will confirm.
You sure you didnt catch the area effect of the ability?
Yes, I'm sure.
I'm not aware of any "pros" claiming that TEC is inferior to the other factions. I have heard a pro say that TEC was vulnerable in the opening phase of the game if a vasari player were very close to him and rushed him, but that doesn't seem to be your problem. Try scouts again, but build a TON of them - I mean a TON. If he composes his fleet of all illums, you should win. If he has other things mixed in, well, it's more complicated, and scouts alone may not work.&nbs
If you find that there is too much stuff happening too fast, I would recommend lowering your speed settings (are you playing on fast?). A fast setting means you don't have time to contemplate, much less execute, any real strategy, and you certainly can't effectively handle multiple things at one time. As far as your other concerns about lack of depth, repetitiveness, etc. I'm not sure what to tell you. Perhaps you should try smaller maps with less AI opponents which will r
The changes to the beta are nice, but I'd like to the a range deacrease in the anti stucture friggates so they can't jsut sit there with fighter cover and anhililate your starbase
Is this a joke or serious? Assuming it is serious, the purpose of the anti-structure frigates is to take out starbases.
