I think the comments by Kieron Gillen really hit the nail on the head. Here's his opening point: Spore is a four hour character creator for a polished version of Space Rangers 2. That said, I'm finding that I actually enjoy the process of progressing a wacky new race of critters up to the space stage more than I enjoy the space stage itself (although I did compl

The content / cost ratio of these micro expansions sounds disproportionately low, especially when compared to what was delivered in the original game. $10 for two new orbital structures and some turret upgrades? You're joking, right? From my point of view, this does make the "The Gamers Bill of Rights" seem a little farcical, perhaps point 3 should be altered to read: iii) Gamers shall have the right to expect to be charged at cynically high prices for any meaningful
I guess I'm not being entirely fair. Theoretical physics has developed a fair bit of interesting mathematics as a side effect, and I can hardly fault that. Going off off topic, I never really got into the GalCiv games, despite losing years of my life to Master of Orion 2.
Maybe I misinterpreted your remark about drawing a similarity between the big bang and the " 'all out of nothing' scenario". At least to me, the statement "all out of nothing" only makes some kind of sense if you assume that there is some underlying passing of time. I agree that cyclical models have a certain intuitive appeal, but our intuition is based only on prior human experience, and demonstrably fails pretty badly when it comes to physical scenarios that are well outside the real
re: Bodyless
And last but not least: if you believe in something, why cant you do it silently?
I'll have to disagree with you here - I believe the sharing of beliefs can actually be quite a positive and constructive process, as long as everyone involved has an open mind and is receptive to having their own thinking challenged. If some of your beliefs don't hold up to criticism, it's not the end of the world, it's an opportunity to revise or replace them with something
If there was no standard for right and wrong, people would have no concept of such a thing. They would behave more like robots, making decisions that had the most benefit for themselves.
Something like this happened to me just the other day. I was waiting at the bar to be served and a robot cut right in front of me and ordered drinks. True story.
I can never be much bothered keeping up with hardware myself, but I've found the [link="http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/Gaming_Machine"]OCAU Wiki[/link] to be a somewhat handy and reasonably up-to-date-ish crutch for this kind of thing. Prices are in AUD$ (it's an australian site) & I've no idea how they compare to the UK, but presumably you'd be after essentially the same kind of hardware:
@SanChonino: your first post got a fair chuckle out of me - pity that was about the only good song from that album :/ The pseudoscience mathemagic trickery makes me sad. Chaos theory? 3*3? Quantum bloody mechanics? Let's not take precise technical concepts completely outside of their domains and `apply' them to ethics or morality. Urgh. Wow - actually managed to obtain the update. For anyone wishing to replicate my experience: * obtain a mild red wine hangover * put on the latest Portishead album * get the latest release version of Sins via Impulse * switch Impulse to 'use alternate download mechanism' and 'show pre-release versions' * obtain some chicken sandwiches * attempt to update the Sins install * profit?
Apologies, I can't resist. re: CommanderAdama
I imagine only a person who is a pirate would have a problem with using Impulse.
I have a problem with using Impulse because it doesn't work.
I have also experienced an error attempting to reinstall Sins after uninstalling it via Impulse. -- [26/07/2008 12:29:07 PM] ---------------------------------------------------- Context: DownloadFile - Retrieving Remote File Size (Web) Message: -1 C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Impulse\Temporary\DownloadQueue\drengin-sin\sin1.09[b].038.impulse http://dl1.impulsedriven.com/download.ashx?b=115&v=1.09[b].038&t=FGwgwUFlgN8BaKkBT23w9AmMa%2fD8bH9I95HuufI

Well said Coelocanth (for both of your posts). I want to make some kind of ill-fitting satirical argument about Toyota's sensible commercial decision to re-engineer all their excellent land vehicles to offer yellow submarine variants - product lines that would no doubt be hugely popular with the privately-owned coloured-submersible market - but I'll refrain. :)

master of orion 2 & master of magic. oh, and ufo: enemy unknown. The hints that Stardock is working on a strategy game with partial MoM inspiration makes me oh so excited.
Yay for griefers. Yayyy. Sounds like the main lobby just needs some moderation, a report mechanism and serial bans.
I enjoy pirates. Ideally there would also be space-vikings. Yarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
I've been using steam for about 6 months now (since obtaining a decent net connection) after buying orange box, and I can't say I've had any problems with it at all. That said, I've been using it almost exclusively to play Team Fortress 2 multiplayer, so I don't share some of the gripes that some people have relating to phone-home-for-singleplayer (although, as a number of folks have pointed out, you can put steam into offline mode to disable this, so it's hardly the end of the world).
I'm another Aussie and a big fan of digital distribution. Sins downloaded in about an hour or so a few months back when I bought it, and generally found the whole procedure hassle free.
@Novaburst: "the 4x MoMish spiritual successor" really? Stardock are working on one? Oh my oh my oh my oh my.
1) toggle button, marked with infinity symbol. bottom of screen, right of center. 2) in other races there are sometimes horses (esp. in horse races), whilst in sins there are rarely even ponies.
Perhaps if replays contained periodic autosaves, these could be used as "chapters" that you could skip forward or back between, and then simulate the game forwards. Of course I dunno how practical this would be to implement.
"Anybody actually able to see what's in the big white box in the OP?" if you use your magical text selector it highlights and is visible. at least with firefox/windows
I for one would like a three-legged race.
