My understanding is that it changes the random system by lowering the minimum possible rolls. That actually has a very substantial impact. If you look at a 6 sided die, you can roll 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. The average roll is 3.5. If you suddenly can't roll 1, the average roll is now 4. Pretty nice, eh?

"Broadband" means anything faster then dial up, so it could vary quite a bit. It took me a few hours to download the entire bundle (including movies, which are the single biggest piece and are I believe optional), but I'm on a slow 1.5mbps line. On a faster cable line, it wouldn't have taken that long. I think it compares pretty well to Civ 4 actually. Colonization stops a lot faster in my experience then city founding does, simply because there's comparatively few planets to colonize (

Hi. Won my first game lsat night. :) I have some questions about Starbases and ship repairs. 1. Whats the range on the ship assisting modules? I had one that increased ship shields, but I couldn't find a way to tell what the range was or if it was actually helping my ships. 2. Is there a way to make ships repair faster? I had some get damaged in combat, and it seemed to take forever for them to regain any HP (and they never did get back to full). 3. What do ec

Hi. Thinking about picking up this game, and I've got a couple of questions. If I get the ultimate bundle, can I still play the campaigns from the first two games after installing Twilight of the Arnor? If so, how do I do that (is there another start menu shortcut to run the old game?)? Another person on this forum mentioned a tutorial. How indepth is that? Can a newbie play it and then have some idea of whats going on when they start a game? (One of the biggest problems I had with
I love these people complaining about a beta for god sakes.
The game went gold a while ago. We are in fact not talking beta code anymore. Thats the same code on the release disk. They're busy working away on patches that you'll get to download immediately after installing (day 1 patching, how very PC gaming), but saying "its a beta, ignore the problems" is a complete joke. There were way too many technical issues for them to magically be resolved in two weeks. I
A related question about AI levels - what exactly occurs when you level up the AI? More cash I presume?
Easy/Normal/Hard all have the same cash level. They don't "cheat", they get the same resources the player does. The main difference is in how aggressive and smart they are. Several Hard AI's are also much more likely to gang up on a player then Easy/Normal ones are, as of 1.0.4. Unfair AI does cheat.

When I wanted to register my boxed copy, I hit the "Download Updates" button in the game, which brought me to this site. Type the key in, and it registered. You don't have to use Stardock Central. Though if you did get ripped off, that really sucks. :(

The first few games can be very frustrating, especially when you're making rookie mistakes but don't know what they are. :) Here's some tips: - When in doubt, drop the difficulty to easy (click the rank next to a player a few times to cycle through). - If you want an easier time at the start, create a game that is 2v2. Put an AI on your team, and set it to "Locked Teams". You'll have an ally to help you out. - You can turn Pirates off in the game options (same place yo

Oh yeah, thats another good point. Since everything is instanced, you see a lot more load screens. Given that the load times are insanely long already, having more of them just compounds the problem. Performance and bugs are the top problems really, but once you get past that there's other problems too. Its sad really, it seems MMO companies just don't learn that in a post WoW environment, you can't launch a buggy, horribly imbalanced game with terrible performance. People are a lot les

I tried it out and was really let down. The performance was brutal. I had all kinds of problems getting it to actually take settings changes (three tries before all my graphics settings stuck), and I had two lockups (had to CTRL ALT DEL out) before actually getting into the game world. Load times on zoning are measured in minutes. Once there? Meh. In its current incarnation, spellcasters don't get anything like the combos the melee get. You spam a spell until stuff dies, its exactly lik

I agree, starting with the extractors already built seems like a good idea. Its not a huge time savings, but nothing is really going on when you're buliding them at the very start anyway. It reminds me a lot of "advanced start" in Civilization 4. The idea there was that you could start with a bit of a boost (extra towns/units/research). The main thing it got rid of was how the first 20 turns of every game in Civ 4 are basically just "move the scout and hit next turn." Speeding up the op

So if I read this thread right, 1.1 will be a patch where they've enhanced diplomacy by making you choose sides on the "should there be fiery explosions when ships blow up in space" argument? Which side is the new Tom Cruise headed faction taking on that?

I like the idea, and I like them in the early game in Sins. In late game though I find them useless, its not worth bribing them because they can do so little damage against an upgraded fleet. Maybe if they were smarter and did hit and run tactics against enemy installations, rather then sticking around to get owned.

Your income is determined from a couple of things: 1. Planet population. More people = more tax income. Planetary upgrades increase the number of people. The first two upgrades also remove the underdevelopment penalty (new planets that haven't been developed generate negative income). 2. Allegiance. Every planet has an allegiance to your empire. As that value goes down, you lose tax income. You can raise it with culture buildings (Broadcast Centers, Media Hubs, Temples of Communion)

If you're running Windows Vista, most games don't install a normal icon anymore (its a Games for Windows thing in Vista). If you go to Start > Games, you'll see it in there. I'm really not sure what it would put in startup though, I don't have anything like that in my installation.
Game developers are right to protect their games from piracy. I just wish there was some better way to protect their products without making it so difficult to use.
If this stuff actually stopped piracy, maybe. But it doesn't. It absolutely DOES NOT WORK! Both games will be on some Torrent site with this stuff stripped out by the release date. The pirated copy will work fine without phoning EA. Legitimate copies will have problems due to people being offline, s

Oh boy, another company who thinks putting this crap in actually helps. Here's some free advice for EA: making a paid copy of the game run worse then a pirated copy does not encourage people to buy the game. In fact, your setup tells people not to buy the game at all if they're going to be offline for extended periods. What you're actually doing is ENCOURAGING piracy, since its not like these measures will actually stop anybody from pirating it (they'll be stripped out by release).
