so I have to install another piece of 'we own your life if you want to play our games'-ware on my system
No - you only need to install if to PATCH the game. You can play the game (at whatever version you are currently at) without Impulse. This is NOT like Steam...

Note: You will need a owned and validated copy of Sins to buy the expansions too I would imagine. Impulse will be checking!!! I also cannot recall where in the GBOR it says users can transfer licences SECOND HAND...

Also, it is only something you can do if the tasks can be done at the same time independently. If you can do task A and B at the same time, then you can do parrallel stuff. Having network code on a different thread won't help if there is nothing to generate/processs the data for/from the network code. My understanding of Sins works like this 1) Process a round of simluation 2) Send the data to all other users 3) Host checks the cheksum data for all part
Oh, Red Bull... ugh... I have somewhat... traumatic experiences with it. The year is 2007. The annual Music & Multimedia Fair is home to the PC PLAY Arena among other things. That's ~30 gaming PCs and ~10 consoles. You can imagine the amount of children people ar
You could even have an upgrade option where some of the armor is omitted in exchange for higher acceleration...a very real choice that would effect combat tactics
And would mean that each ship is not exact stats (apart from the cap level mods), which probably is not supported by the game engine - you are basically asking for "Build Ship Type X, Model A" vs "Build Ship Type X, Model B"... By having frigates 5% faster then cruisers always, you would be able to cat
I agree...my experience in multiple RTS online games is that it is about who can defeat the most players in an evening. It's like wanting to be a king of the hill. I play sins about 80% MP with my friends and we are on the same team against the same number of AI players. Difficulty is set based on the mix of people and their preference. After a multi-hour game we usually have had the chance to talk quite a bit, coordinate and function as team and have generally had a good time.

One last question, do you know if these problems are evident in both LAN and Online games (my guess is that if its random calculations that could be desync'ing then it would affect both)?
The desync occurs anytime a random number is generated on one machine that makes something different to another machine. So yes, any game with more then one CPU running the calcs can have the issue.
one more option I'd like to see is the possibility to throttle the bandwidth which Impulse can use. I'd like to reserve some bandwidth for other programms while downloading via Impulse
Good one - I missed that one. Makes sense - P2P programs like emule has it. It means that other people can still surf the web without it being a crawl.... (i.e. they feel like they are on an unused 256 ADSL link :) ) Here's one that is getting REALLY fancy. The ability to det

I would like to have an option to tell IMPULSE when to download something. In Australia we have capped plans. The one I am on allows me 12GB between 12pm and 12am (Sydney time where the ISP is based) and 54GB between midnight and midday. If I have a large download, I would love to be able to setup the download to start at a given time and stop downloading if it passes another time. So even if it is not finished, it would pick up again the next night during the off-peak window. Someone else po

You need to be on version 1.13. 1.05 went EOL ages ago. Without 1.13, you cannot play online via ICO. Also, posting to dead threads (like the other one you posted to) is not the way to get help. That thread is dead as it is no longer relavent
Stardock has ONE game title they made themselves, and ONE they bought the rights to as it was in publisher limbo, and likely had very little influence on the finished product
They actually had a lot of influence on the game, ranging from suggestions to testing etc... Stardock works WITH the developer as a partnership, as opposed to taking the game, shipping it and never doing anything with it again... Hence the patches etc... The original version of Sins would
