Well. Now. That was fast, and I'm willing to blame it on luck just this once. I exaggerated - it took me almost three hours (vice the two I bragged about - but I never lie). One borg on hard researcher (because I'm a glutton for punishment), me as Fed, Rom and Klink allies on unfair, and three Doms on another team (also all unfair). Well, I got lucky on the map (Aerolian Sector). I was right next to the borg. Normally, this would be

This is... either insanity or hard core. Not sure which. The notion of taking out a borg when you also have other enemies (3X Doms?!?!) is pretty nuts - even with allies (unless they are cruel setting). There's only one rationale response to this - I must try it immediately! Order up another round of Glenlivet, Scotty, 'cause we're gonna be workin' late tonight! (P.S. - I've fallen out of love with the Federation. Which means I must

I know that the mod crew went to great lengths to make the borg nigh-unbeatable, single player, unless you had a team, but... Challenge Accepted... And Annihilated!!!! The gory details are down below, but they are font that is black (same as background) and thus can't be seen unless you highlite the text. I've hidden it so

psychoak - the research problem doesn't seem likely to me. The couple times I've crashed was only about a minute after starting the game, and has never recurred. I've played with and against all of the races on the hardest settings. Unless somebody can name the research, my money is still on rig.

Loki - Pretty sure it's not the graphics settings, 'cause my rig only crashed the one time and I changed nothing. That meshes with what other people say too. At least, I'm pretty sure Sins isn't automatically turning down the settings. Personally, I still think it's rig-related. Don't know what (prolly not a RAM bug or something), but seems likely based on discussion.

I haven't heard from anyone on the (active) mod team, but for those of you getting minidumps, there's no active workaround right now (members correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just trying to answer questions). Note that almost everyone gets a minidump the first time they play the mod. This minidump does not repeat for most people if you just re-launch the program. I've noticed that disabling and re-enabling the mod can also give you a dump, and we had one th

Um, right now I'm trying to figure out what the hell my login name was - may take me a bit since there's no "retrieve lost account" option anywhere for ICO... Update: nevermind, I figured it out. You figure ICO would let you tie in your board name to your ICO account, but that would be too smart.

psychoak - More on my experience with the Dom: I find that the best strategy depends on human vs. bot enemy. If your enemy is a bot, just build a couple of trade stations (battle stations) in the direction closest to where the enemy will warp in, and don't build a single turret. The enemy will send in lone bombers that wander up and start bombing, all while being blown to smithereens by the trade stations. In fact, building weapons structures is worse becaus

Weekend Game? Well, I note that a few people were interested in playing the weekend before last, so I figure I'll toss out an invite for a weekend game and see who bites. I'll be online this Saturday and Sunday at the following times in a SOA2 chat room. Anyone with the mod running is welcome. We'll be running the 1.19rc version of th

Okay, after much additional information by psychoak, I'm willing to admit the Dominion *can* be a good race. In face, they can pretty much run the board - *if* they are left to their own devices for about 30-45 minutes to do heavy research and cap ship building. Although I'm still skeptical about how effective building lots of defensive structures is, the Doms are very effective at offense, if you know how to use them. Once you have one of each of their cap ships

psychoak - Thanks for the additional tips. You were right about the range on the Dom station attack ability, I must have been zoomed too far out. However, there's still something wrong with the attack ability - lemme know if you want me to troubleshoot. I blew one up with - get this - three Akiras (plus their squads). Both the station and the Akiras were topped out (I topped out the station in a star and then swapped to the feds). I swapped back

Okay, psychoak has officially given me the intro education on the basics of Dom forces, but they still seem wanting to me. Please don't take this as criticism, since it's more likely I still just don't understand the tactics (as psychoak previous post makes clear), but I guess I'm still a little skeptical that they can hold their own. In particular: I'll grant the power of the Dom starbase attack ability, which is as powerful as psychoak says. &n

Well, if Stress wants the Borg to be awesome, let no man call for Nerfing! Seriously though, you only have about 20 minutes to start attacking them. On a large map, it's guaranteed death. You probably only stand a chance on a smaller one where you can get to them quickly, or with at least 8 opponents. As I play more, I've realized the Fed is even more powerful than I thought. To heck with the heavy cruisers (Intrepid/Akira), spam the heck out of the u

Well I don't know what was causing the earlier minidumps, but I haven't had a single one in a long time, even with watching ships come out of phase jump! A couple of first impressions on the races for those who are playing: Borg - Yes, the Borg are RIDICULOUSLY overpowered, which is the point. In previous releases, it was actually possible to beat the borg single-handedly or with just an ally or two. Try, like, a minimum of 5 or 6 now. The most unfair

Hmm, I've played several games with all races except borg over the past two days, and I haven't had a single minidump. Frankly, I haven't the slightest idea what's causing them. Oh, and I will be submitting some bugs. Maybe I can even be guilt-tripped into fixing a few of them, but I'm on a Dragon Age II kick. Trying to beat it on the "nightmare" setting is a labor of love.

I'm starting to suspect the problem may be limited to one or two races if people are managing to play for hours while others can't get more than a few minutes. The other possibility - that it's related to rigs, is too horrific to contemplate (Sins has been immune to such problems so far).

Although Harpo knows, like, everything about Sins, he's not quite correct about 1.19rc being effectively interchangeable with 1.20. I managed to run 1.19rc with the mod okay, but updated to 1.20 without realizing it. I'm getting the minidumps 1-10 minutes into the game just like a lot of people here, which I didn't get before. Can't say I have any knowledge of what changed between the 1.19rc and 1.20 or what is causing the minidump, but it's out there.

Oh, that bug (the "traveling outside the grav well bug)? I thought we'd fixed that bug back when I was actively working on the mod (before I fell off the wagon and became another #$*& spectator). It's a pretty simple bug to fix, programatically. It's caused by having: dynamic motion on ships (i.e., the tweak that causes ships to move like fighters from regular sins), and having ships with similar/identical speed, and</

Well the answer to that is in your map selection. You can't go into a 1 vs. 1 map that's so tiny that you're butting up against the borg in the first few minutes of the game - they will eviscerate you. You need to pick a map large enough that you can get out into the galaxy and build up your resources before you are regularly clashing with them. As Jim notes, you need to have a few cap ships in your fleet if you're going to stand the slightest chance against them.

It's not clear that the six factions need to be twin versions of three factions. In fact, I'd put money on the notion that they are not linked at all - I'll bet they're just trying to avoid the hard work of coming up with another back story for three more races. Coming up with a "varient" race is much, much easier since you can duplicate plot and stats/models. And since this mod has demonstrated you can already have far more races, I don't see any benefit. However,

Obviously I haven't posted on here in months, but it looks like you guys are about ready to release an update. Which, of course, means that Stardock is about ready to put out a huge new improvement to the game! https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/?aid=405917 Well, on the upside, it has provisions for up to six factions. I assume that means that the infamous 2 gig bug will be fixed (it had better be, since that was built in when the game first released years ago).

Good to hear this mod is still rollin' (no thanx to my black sheep @ss). In the fine summer months of nothing-the-#$*&-coming out worth playing, I'm feelin' like I can help out some more. If anybody on the mod has some work for a code monkey, shoot it my way and I'll take a look. Haven't had much of a real challenge since I resurrected the mod from the overwrite-grave 6 months ago after someone (who shall remain anonymous) tried to overwrite it with a bum version all o
