Not sure if it would work (it'd be a pain to test) but you could probably give them the research for it, make it free, take 1 second to research and see how it goes. More than likely possible in Diplomacy see'ing as the Pirates have research by default but its worth a shot.

@mike2h: I'm glad to hear changing that graphics setting helped, weirdly some people do suffer from this issue and others dont but it is a very common issue. However, I hope you enjoy playing Distant Stars the way it's meant to be played... Crash free! @anteachtaire: This is how the ability works in default sins we havent buffed/nerfed it, its to stop the ability being abused and becoming incredibly overpowered.

The reference data included with the current version of the forge tools is actually out of date which would be causing your crashing. There are some other threads around in the modding forum that has the complete reference data for you to download sorry I don't have a link handy but im sure someone will be in to post a link at some point. The one thing that has always been a HUGE shortcoming with the SoaSE AI is that it stockpiles its resources instead of spending them. At the end of most games with the AI if you check their resources they always have hundreds of thousands of Credits, Metal & Crystal (at the end of longer games) if the AI actually spent these resources on a fleet, research or anything infact the AI could be an actual threat just due to sheer numbers, Instead they just stockpile the money use a small(ish) f
