On most of the standard maps the player starts are random but in Galaxy Forge you can lock them for Team 1 or Team 2 (or Team 3, etc.).
Just downloaded the Impulse set up file. At 1.8 MB it's not very big and doesn't seem as threatening as what I might have thought. (Edit) Now that I've installed it (it keeps downloading and is larger than 1.8 MB, I think) it only picked up Sins as an installed game and missed Unreal Tournament 3 and Unreal Tournament GOTY (UT 2004 wasn't available for purchase, though). What do I have to do to get Impulse to recognize other titles that it's affiliated with? When wil
Stardock/Ironclad should probably release it for PS3 just to make some $$$. If I were the CEO, I would definitely look into doing that and I wouldn't blame them at all. Game programmers gotta eat. However, a part of me hopes that they won't do it because it increases the chances that they'd succumb to consolitus and that any Sins sequels would end up watered down with cutesy graphics, less content, and a horrible consolized user interface and online multiplayer menu. (Consolitus killed
Sometimes newer players will take off if they think the game is over or they're going to be crushed, which is sad. I once played a game where I was reduced to one or two planets and a capital ship or two (I had to migrate my home planet into my allies' area in order to survive), and I had a ball just managing my capital ship and helping my team, and we ended up winning after a long, hard, drawn out struggle in a 4v4.
To really see how your strategy stacks up, you need to play the game in online multiplayer. It's more challenging but also more rewarding. It also has social aspects (make friends online).
Just keep in mind that getting RA up and humming when you're playing online multiplayer is easier said than done, especially if you're on the wrong type of map for it. Also, your human opponents (unlike AI) will all be very aware of the Vasari's potential to go RA and they'll do what they can to prevent you from attaining RA. You'll also be vulnerable while you spend your resources building Imperial Labs and Phase Gates (dead give away to your opponents) and doing the research. Also, the Vasa
I'm too scared to play online... I think I'm pretty good, but I hate thinking that then getting ripped to shreds lol
The opponents eviscerating your fleets all had their own fleets eviscerated at one time, too. You just have to suck it up and pay your dues if you want to become a decent online player. I suspect that many if not most of the folks you'll meet online understand that many people are still learning and you'll also meet lots of other newbies, too.
The Monk is a great asset to the Sins community and I thank him for supporting the game and for taking the time to discuss my issues with me (WHIPperSNAPper) on his Teamspeak server.
Building more than one Evacuator sounds good but how well does it work in practice? I mean, they have to survive to Level 6 in order to be able to slurp planets but opposing players also enjoy harpooning those space whales.
You know I hate starting between 2 enemies in a 3v3 4v4. I will say such starting positions have made me a stronger player. Their tough spots to be in no doubt.
It's even worse when you're facing the dreaded 2-on-1 or 3-on-1 on the large random multistar map.
I've looked at your maps Jixra, but I haven't seen any of P5yy's maps. Jixra I just have not caught you online to get into a game. Do you have a game time?
You haven't seen me online because I play as WHIPperSNAPper, which is the name I wanted to use when I first tried to register here (unsuccessfully) and for some reason the website wouldn't let me use the name on my next registration attempt. At least that's how I remember it. I do have
My wife has a hard time understanding it, too, especially since she thinks I should spend less time gaming and more time busing my rump looking for a job in my field. Women and gaming just do not mix well, IMHO.
In addition to learning the basic game mechanics, you also need to have a good understanding of each race and its abilities, and then you need to learn and develop strategy for single player games and most importantly, strategy for online multiplayer.
All we're hoping for in 1.1 is that they fix the hosting issues, further reduce the number of minidumps, and enable auto-downloading for Galaxy Forge-made custom maps.
Why not play in games that other people are hosting? That's what I did before the Monk helped me fix my router issues. Hosts need game joiners too, ya know. Kinda silly to host if everyone else is trying to host and no one can join.
If you don't know about the Vasari, the phase gates, and the Returning Armada ability, you really should take the time to learn about it because it's very important in any game where you have a Vasari player. You definitely need to be aware of it if you want to play online multiplayer (so that you'll have a respect for the power of Returning Armada and so that you know that you and your teammates need to go crush the Vasari opponents before they get it up and humming).
Does it have to be running in the background in order for me to play Sins online?

No and yes.
"Stop right where you are! Do you know the score pal? If you're not cop you're little people!" "No choice, huh?" "No choice, pal." Thanks for your detailed response. It doesn't sound like it'll be that bad and I guess I'll have to have it since I'm a Sins freak . (The dialog is from the movie Blade Runner, which ev

The years 2000-2002--UT99's heyday, were an amazing time to be an FPS gamer. I remember being able to find over 3000 people playing Capture-the-Flag (and that's just one game type) 24/7. I remember the joy of discovering new servers and communities and new custom maps. The game was so pop
It's not about being afraid, it's about the fact that internet anonymity turns much of the 'general public' in to complete f*cktards, and that some people (me being one of them) can't be arsed to willingly subject themselves to it. I've got all day at work to spend dealing with idiots, I'd rather not do it in my leisure time as well.
In other words, you don't like e-jerks. Unfortunately, as with any game, there are a couple jerkwads out there, but they are the exception.
I hate to come off as a skeptic and I tend to trust Stardock, but I wonder, are there any rational reasons why a person would not want to have Impulse? Does it run all the time, gobbling up RAM and CPU? Does it mess around with the registry? Is it set up so that it loads at startup? Can I still play Sins online without it? Does it have to be running in the background in order for me to play Sins online? What if I don't want hand holding and want
It's one of the perks of playing Vasari.
You say you're getting swarmed by multiple fleets (as though they're all allied against you). In the Game Options settings, do you play with "Locked Teams" or "Unlocked Teams"? Try locking the teams which ends diplomacy and makes it an "every man for himself" game and that way the AI won't gang up on you, at least not as allies.
I say screw the AI and come play the real game--online multiplayer. Of course, if after locking the teams you still haven't figured out how to beat the hard AI, you might not do so well online. However, you'll still find plenty of newbies online who want to play other newbies, so give it a try. Wouldn't it be nice to have human teammates you could talk to and coordinate with?
What's the max number of tactical slots (ignoring the Advent's +4 research boost) for a Desert planet again? Isn't it 35, same as for a Terran?
