I can't speak for other customs, but the reason to play my customs (and from what I can tell, P5yy's maps) is: 1. Good starting positions for all players. 2. No one starts between two opponents; you start near your teammates. 3. Symmetry. My maps are balanced so each team has the same map advantages and disadvantages.
When I hear people talk about rigid build orders and numerous 'builds' that all end in 'spam', I know it's not the sort of game I want to play against other people.
The strategy is in figuring out what you need to do so that you can spam out more ships than the other guy. It's not about designing the prettiest and most diverse fleet. It's about building the most powerful and most useful fleet.
But a 3v3 with strangers? I'll just play the AI thanks.[/quo
I only play with people I know, and we have a grand time of it, coordinating our movements. The general public though? I'd rather not.
You make it sound like the "general public" players smell. What exactly are you afraid of? Losing?
I know the feeling.
It will produce Assailants, Skirmishers, Carriers, Sentinels, and Enforcers (did I miss any ships?) regardless of whether or not you researched the techs for them.
I wonder what Stardock's/Ironclad's real, behind-the-scenes reasoning was for designing it so that custom maps would not auto-download. I'm pretty certain that it was a design decision because otherwise it makes no sense that "Map Designer" maps would auto-download but Galaxy Forge maps would not. I can think of a couple possible reasons: 1. Concern that people will send out virsuses disguised as the game's map files (which are text files). 2. Concern that some c
I really don't understand why so many people are clamoring for a campaign. After all, as far as I know, Civilization, or at least Civ 1 and 2, didn't have a campaign; you just played on random maps. How is having a campaign supposed to change or improve the game play? If you're a single player-only person, why not just play through all of the standard maps and think of it as a "campaign". That having been said, what this game really needs is the ability to be able to auto-downlo
You almost make it sound as though every Vasari has a right to get RA up and running on any type of map with any number of players. If it were that easy to get RA up and running there'd be no reason for anyone to play any race other than Vasari. Opposing players, at least halfway decent ones, are fully aware of the Vasari's potential to get RA up and they won't allow that to happen if they can. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that in 3v3's and 4v4's the opposing Vasari(s) might even
Since people are pimping Quake, I can't help but say--the original Unreal Tournament (1999), baby!, the greatest FPS of all time.
For a good time, try making a map with Galaxy Forge...you figure out exactly where each planet goes, that kind of planet it is, and what it connects to.
I agree with the comment about "play the tutorial". Also, play the single player game for a week or two before moving on to online multiplayer (the real game). A couple nights ago I had a guy on my team on the large random multistar system in a 4v4 who had almost literally just pulled the game out of the box (a box noob). He said he didn't like single player games and that he was only interested in online multiplayer (an attitude that I commend). Somehow my team won but we did it i
unless you plan to play a match several hours weapon upgrades are not that important, since there realy expesive, take time and dont give lots of reward any time soon.
What you say might be true if you were only going to play a small map in a game that would be decided in under 30 minutes. The real determiner of whether or not it makes sense to upgrade your shields, hull, armor, and weapons is the size of your fleet and whether adding another ship or two would st
Returning armada- This wouldn't be a problem is the tec and Advent equivalent to this existed but it doesn't the best you can do with tec is power of industry and insurgency. I don't Think advent even has a second super weapon there entire research revolves around fighters, defense, and culture.
That's amazing, that list you put together. Seems like every race has advantages and disadvantages compared to all of the other races. Perhaps the game really is balanced overal
Clans are never very effect without some sort of base of operations to coordinate all the necessary things and how-to's that clans must face.
IMHO, it would help a lot if clanners would become proficient with IRC and if they would form a community on the IRC, having individual clan channels and arranging pickup-games-matches (almost like having clan matches but with teams of mixed players). Sadly, few people know how to use IRC or that it even exists this day and they ha
Sorry, but no thanks. I'm not a big online gaming fan. I need a gaming experience that I can drop on a second's notice because one of the RetroKids is into something, or because RetroWife is giving me "that look". I can't guarantee I'll be ever able to devote a full hour to an MP game experience. -- Retro
Now...that as a reason for not playing MP...I can understand.
AI will always be unimaginative. I suggest giving online multiplayer a try. Who knows, you might like it and make some friends.
First and foremost, in order to win an online game of Sins you have to employ a monotonous strategy in order to win. This means rushing to tech to certain units and technologies because they are superior choices to anything else in the game.
That's true, but there is much, much more to the strategy than merely choosing what ships to build. Where and when should I attack? Should I prepare to get attacked? Should I invest in improving my economy? Should I do military re
I understand where you're coming from Marlowe, but I still think you'd find a bigger challenge if you went online. There also social aspects to playing online. I hope you'll give it a chance. Not everyone out there is a prepubescent e-jerk trying to prove that they have the biggest e-penis, generously dispensing taunts; there are also mature adults who play the game.
The Advent capital ships are nice, but at the end of the day, capital ships are huge targets for enemy fleets and they're really just support ships. If you play online multiplayer (the real game) and you try to "Go Big or Go Home" and build only capital ships or capital ships with few Illuminators or Crusaders your capital ships will get blown up.
Why would that be a reason not to play online multiplayer? You really have no idea what you're missing. The difference in the amount of challenge that you face playing against a human intelligence as opposed to dumb, unimaginative AI is huge.
How does the new Malice work again? I know that the propagated damage is tallied and applied when the Malice ends--but what takes the propagated damage and what ships need to be hit for the damage to propagate? Does the damage get propagated to the other affected ships when only the single targeted ship is hit?
Could be good. However, I find most books based on games/movies/etc. are pretty poorly written and not worth the time to read them. If a good author would take up the project and come up with a decent story, I think there's some good material to work with though.
I agree; they end up being contrived and tend to have little depth. Let's hope no one tries to make a Sins movie.
There's also an IRC channel for the game at: irc.Stardock.com #sins
I'll be 36 in August. I've been gaming ever since I was six years old when my Dad brought home an Atari 2600. Some people might look down their noses and wonder what a college-educated married man-child is doing gaming, but those same people probably enjoy spending hours vegetating in their recliners watching mindless TV shows and movies. At least my recreational activity is interactive and somewhat social.
Like in the 1.1 patch?
Let's hope.
