Different units do different jobs, and the requirements of ranged&melee units to work in concert means that you have to not only have a good mix of units, but also a good tactical plan. Just spamming 'the best' unit is a sure way to lose in DoW2 multiplayer, and I understand that even though I've never played DoW2 multiplayer . That sounds absolutely wonderful in magical theoryland, but in most of the RTS' I've played online this is si

Haven't played DoW2 since the original beta. Sounds like I might give it another shot with Retribution. No GFWL, decent number of races in the mix now, map count is no longer a joke, better single player, and super units are back for all races. For $30 I'm willing to give it shot despite the Steamworks. Also good to hear customization is back. Can't wait to make my Cobra Imperial Guard force again.

Going to second here that I thought Company of Heroes nailed it. You had a few different unit production buildings and one tech building, and that was it for your base. You had a variety of options for buildings in the field like bunkers, tank traps, artillery, etc. on top of that. The net result was that you didn't have to do much back at your base, but you could still make defensive set ups in the field and attack the opponent's base to destroy their unit production buildi
Lots of good replies about building less but more powerfull mines. But I don't see any mention of just having the AI build less mines, or almost none at all. Somehow adjust the priority to build mines. If you have to, place them higher in the the tech tree (tier 2 is just too low). They currently build way too many - and they really aren't effective, so why build them at all.
That's mainly an issue with

Defraggler is a disk defragmenter by the ccleaner people. Can't say if it's the best or not, but it's a major improvement over Windows defrag and supports all versions of Windows.

Reply to Stupid DRM! in PC Gaming

Online authentication of any sort, beyond an initial check when first installing, in a single player game is an automatic no-purchase for me these days. Steam is borderline as DRM, but at least you still have the offline option. For now. Publishers can stop pretending it's to stop piracy, because nobody is buying it except naive shareholders. They want to fully control users access to their product at all times, and I won't have any part of it.

Will be interesting to see how soon MS will follow suit, as it's now inevitable that all consoles will go this route. I'm guessing they'll wait until the Xbox 720 and use this window of opportunity to make Sony look like the evil DRM overlords. Forgetting of course that MS were the ones that told Valve they couldn't release content updates for free on the 360.

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/sony_scrambles_plug_ps3_root_key_hole_will_use_serial_keys_games Yeah, this is console news but considering this is something people have brought up in piracy threads and PC vs. console threads I think people might find it interesting. I've said before that publishers have wanted to head this way, but it looks like it's going to happen much sooner than I thought. I wonder if Gamestop and similar stores will star

Haven't been here for a while, when did DirtySanchezz go full troll? Anyway, based on the sales figures Ironclad/Stardock said Sins had over its run, less than 1% of players play online. There are many reasons for this that I won't get into here, but for there just isn't much interest in the online community. Which sucks for the modders, as some of them put a lot of effort into things yet only a small handful of people know the mods exist. It didn't help that Diplo
I hear what you're saying though, and sadly even in RUSE those stat-whores will try an all-out rush of whatever unit they think is the "right" one(again....playing it like any old RTS) and when they notice it's not actually going to work........rage......quit...... *sigh*
Well, in fairness it's not really a ragequit if your all-in strategy failed. That doesn't make 5 minute games fun for anybody of course, but if
there has yet to be a good ST game.
25th Anniversary was excellent for its time, and the Elite Force games were decent FPS'. Although the Elite Force games weren't very 'startrekky' at the end of the day. You did get a chance to kill the Voyager bridge crew though, so there's that. I agree though there hasn't been a Star Trek game good enough to stand the test of time. Nothing I can think of that I'd ever

Pirates with new toys instead of pirates with invincible stats sounds great. I liked the idea in Diplomacy that you could use pirate missions to break late game stalemates, but the way pirates were they became so strong that they pretty much took over the universe. Any chance of a special pirate cap ship? [e digicons]:pout:[/e] While we're making big changes to pirates, any chance that the TEC ability Insurgency can be changed? Right now, it spa

Where are the golden ages of pc gaming ? It's not PC that's in a slump, the entire industry has been pretty cold for the last few years. I can't remember the last time I was excited about a big name game on release day. Everything is so bland and generic these days that things like the X-Men arcade game re-release is hailed as an amazing game. Back on topic, nothing much more to say here. Ubisoft can get out of the PC game busines

Picked it up when it was $20 on Steam. Really underwhelmed by it so far. The single player MMO feeling is unshakable, which isn't a good feeling for me. Lots of busywork with little plot to keep you interested. The lack of class and proper skill progression really destroys any sense of balance. Why can I pick final-tier ranger skills when I haven't put a single point into the ranger tree? I'd be disappointed had I paid the full $40 it. As it is I gu

Could be useful once they start monitoring more sources. Smart of them to start something like this; within 3-4 years I expect pretty much all PC software, not just games, to be digital download only. A site like this could become THE goto site when looking for any PC software. Listing the regional availibility is nice too.

Serious Sam 2nd Encounter HD for $2 is pretty good. It's a fun game co-op. Mindless shooting, but mindless shooting that knows it's mindless shooting and has fun with it. Really no point in the gold edition, as 1st Encounter is basically just the same thing only not as good. And LOL at SF4 for $15. They should be giving that away at this point; anyone who really wants to play SF already has a console with SSF4, since Capcom refuses to release SSF4 for PC because

Yeah, yeah, this is a Stardock forum and we all hate Steam, blah blah... Anyway, lots of specials like last year for those who have been on the fence about various titles. Most titles on the site are 10-90% off. Some notable stuff today: Super Meat Boy $3.75 (why isn't this game on Impulse at all?!) Various Indie Game packs for $5 each (5 games per pack) CivIV Complete $6.25(!) Evil Genius $1.50 Serious Sam HD 1&2 $7.50 <p

Heh, I know I liked FPS' better when there was no story behind them too. I loved the Unreal Tournament games (well except III) despite them having no story whatsoever. In fact, the series started sucking only when they tried to shoehorn a story into there. Why does my space marine need a personality and emotional baggage between shooting aliens? There's aliens around, they need shooting; there's your plot. Did Duke Nukem bitch and moan about his family o

For those who might have missed it, I was being sarcastic with the title here. I'm mainly looking forward to the smaller studio releases myself. I've pretty much given up on any hyped big publisher release being anything but bland and generic these days. Even Diablo 3 is looking pretty meh to me at this point. After SC2, I'm not expecting anything amazing from Blizzard anymore. It's clearly Activision with a Blizzard logo stamped on the box to disguise it now.&

Friends have tried to drag me into it several times, and I bit on it twice. Both times I lost interest after a couple weeks, around the same point (level 20ish). It was just too much grind, not enough fun. There's lots to do initially to suck you in, but then it slows right down as you now have to kill 300 grey boars to reach the next level...where you then have to kill 400 black boars, etc. etc. It always felt more like a work simulator than fun, but clearly lots of
